In the Netflix adaptation of My Brilliant Career, Sybylla Melvyn (Philippa Northeast) ultimately chooses herself, rejecting both of her romantic interests to focus on her writing.
Sybylla's Decision
Sybylla tells Harry Beecham (Christopher Chung) in an emotional speech that she cannot be his wife and must devote her energy to writing, believing that marriage would prevent her from fulfilling her life's ambition. Harry is left crestfallen after expecting Sybylla to accompany him to his estate, Five Bob, following a year of working as a servant and governess for the McSwat family.
Sybylla explains that she would make him miserable as his wife given her dedication to writing. This ending mirrors the novel, where Sybylla remains single, and it is left unclear whether she becomes a successful writer.
Frank and Harry's Pursuit
The six-part series follows Sybylla's fight against society to become a published author. Sent from her humble home of Possum Gulley, she stays at her grandmother's mansion, Caddagat, where she meets Englishman Frank Howden (Jake Dunn) and farmer Harry Beecham. Both men compete for her affections, but Sybylla remains focused on her literary ambitions.
Author's Life and Legacy
Author Miles Franklin never married and continued writing throughout her life, supporting other writers and seeking to create a unique Australian literature. Her other novels include All That Swagger (1936), Some Everyday Folk and Dawn (1909), Old Blastus of Bandicoot (1931), and Bring the Monkey (1933). She also wrote under the pseudonym Brent of Bin Bin, fearing her newer works would not match the success of My Brilliant Career.
My Brilliant Career is streaming on Netflix now.
