Fans of the hit reality competition show The Traitors have launched a fierce backlash against contestant Michael Rapaport, accusing him of making a homophobic comment about fellow player Colton Underwood during a tense Roundtable discussion.
Controversy Erupts at the Roundtable
The incident unfolded during episode five of season four, which was released on the streaming service Peacock on Thursday 16 January 2026. Underwood, a former star of The Bachelor who publicly came out as gay in 2021, had just accused Rapaport of being a 'Traitor' in the game.
In his retort, Rapaport pointed at Underwood and stated, "Nobody in this room would be better at holding a secret than you." Many viewers and fellow contestants interpreted this as a direct and cutting reference to the years Underwood spent concealing his sexuality before coming out.
Underwood immediately challenged the insinuation, responding, "There it is. You think it was fun for 29 years of my life?" Rapaport then attempted to backtrack, claiming his remark was solely about the game and Underwood's desire to be a Traitor, insisting it had "nothing to do with" his sexuality.
Immediate Backlash from Cast and Viewers
The reaction from others in the castle and watching at home was swift and critical. Fellow competitor and figure skater Johnny Weir condemned the comment during the episode, saying, "You can’t blame somebody being forced into a closet for the majority of their life."
Contestants Maura Higgins and Yam Yam Arocho agreed, labelling Rapaport's words a "very low blow." On social media platform X, the outrage was palpable. One viewer wrote, "Michael Rapaport is mad disrespectful in this latest ep. What he said to Colton and then screaming at Maura is wrong."
Another user commented, "Michael Rapaport proving he was a pos with a homophobic rant means that we all knew exactly who he was this whole time #TheTraitorsUS." The controversy was not limited to this single remark; fans also criticised Rapaport for his behaviour towards other players and for an incorrect use of vocabulary during the episode.
Rapaport's Banishment and Apology
Following the heated exchange, Rapaport was ultimately banished from the castle. In a subsequent direct address to the cameras, he offered an apology. "It sucks, but I felt backed into a corner and I tried to fight my way out of it," he explained.
He continued, "Maybe I fought too hard. I meant what I meant within the context of the game. It had nothing to do with his sexuality. I really, seriously apologise if I offended Colton or anybody in the house. That absolutely wasn’t my intention."
Despite this apology, the discourse surrounding the episode has focused heavily on the perceived insensitivity of Rapaport's original comment. The Independent has approached a representative for Colton Underwood for further comment on the situation.
