Lionsgate has confirmed a sequel to the Michael Jackson biopic Michael, despite the first film receiving overwhelmingly negative critical reviews. The initial movie achieved significant commercial success, securing the biggest opening weekend for any music biopic in history with $217 million (£160 million) in global takings and a total of $715.8 million (£533.2 million) worldwide.
Sequel Details
Lionsgate motion picture chair Adam Fogelson stated that preparations for the second film are progressing well and will explore aspects of Jackson's life and music not covered in the first instalment. The first movie concluded with Jackson's 1988 Bad tour, with scenes detailing early 1990s sexual abuse allegations being cut at the last minute to avoid breaching a settlement agreement.
Production Progress
Fogelson revealed that approximately 25 to 30 per cent of the second film has already been shot from previous production, which will offer financial benefits. The sequel is expected to continue the story of the King of Pop, delving deeper into his later years and musical legacy.
