Masika Kalysha Defends Funeral Photos After Husband's Death

Reality television star Masika Kalysha has launched a furious defence after receiving widespread criticism for posting intimate photographs from her estranged husband's funeral on social media.

A Tragic Loss and Public Grief

Jamar Champs, 38, was killed in a devastating car crash last month in Houston. The fatal collision occurred when a BMW travelling in the wrong direction struck his Tesla Cybertruck head-on. The impact caused Champs' vehicle to careen into an 18-wheeler.

Kalysha, 40, shared a series of raw, emotional images on her Instagram on Monday night. The photos depicted her weeping profusely at the service, at one point being physically supported by her father. Many of the images also featured her two young daughters, nine-year-old Khari, whose father is rapper Fetty Wap, and three-year-old Amari, her child with Champs.

A Defiant Response to Online Trolls

In a caption accompanying the photos, Kalysha wrote emotionally, 'I took my vows. Till death do us part… I will carry on your legacy.' The couple had married in 2021, separated in 2023, and Kalysha had filed for an annulment last year.

The post immediately drew a torrent of criticism from social media users who deemed the public display of grief to be in poor taste. In response, Kalysha issued a blistering retort on her Instagram Stories.

'If you have a problem with ANYTHING I post on MY PAGE involving MY HUSBAND, MY LIFE, MY KIDS, or literally anything I invite you to go fk yourself and unfollow me,' she fumed to her audience of over 850,000 followers.

She adamantly refused to justify her actions, stating, 'I will NOT be explaining myself in any way shape, form or fashion to a single SOUL.' She concluded by thanking her supporters, writing, 'To everyone who has supported me and my kids…I can’t thank you enough. You have carried me on your backs. Please continue to check on us.'

Continued Backlash and Details of the Accident

Despite her defiant message, the trolling continued into Tuesday. One user on X, formerly Twitter, mocked, 'Lmaoooo I’m screaming, masika crazy as hell. Got baby girl in mess smh.' Another critic commented, 'Masika is a sick lady to have someone take all them pictures of her crying at a funeral to post them gives performative not grieving wife very strange.'

Champs' family officially confirmed his death on October 28, following a press release from the Houston Police Department about the crash. The incident unfolded on the Katy Freeway. The driver of the wrong-way BMW was pronounced dead at the scene after the vehicle burst into flames.

Champs was critically injured and later pronounced dead at hospital. The 66-year-old male driver of the 18-wheeler involved in the subsequent collision emerged unharmed.

In a previous statement announcing his death, Kalysha highlighted Champs' character, revealing that even after their separation, he had treated her eldest daughter, Khari, as his own. She described grief as a difficult journey, sharing a poignant exchange with their three-year-old daughter, Amari, who said, 'I want to go with daddy and God in heaven and get the candy.'
