Emmerdale fans predict Debbie Dingle recast after 24 years

Emmerdale fans are certain a recast could be on the way for a Dingle legend. The ITV soap is no stranger to recasting characters, having made its debut on screens way back in 1972.

From Aaron Dingle to Joe Tate, a recast is a pretty regular occurrence in the Dales. In 2024, Samantha Power took on the role of Tina Dingle, replacing Jacqueline Pirie.

Fans predict a Dingle return

Now, fans think another recast is in the cards as they predict another Dingle legend could return - but played by a totally different character.

Debbie Dingle (Charley Webb) made her debut on the soap in 2002 as the daughter of Cain (Jeff Hordley) and Charity (Emma Atkins). And it’s safe to say she played a part in several big moments on the soap. From disastrous relationships to DNA twists, Debbie’s time in the Dales was not short of drama.

Debbie's history in the Dales

However, Debbie moved to Scotland in 2019 when actress Charley Webb went on maternity leave to have her third child, Ace. She returned at Christmas 2020 and was revealed to be sleeping with Al Chapman (Michael Wildman), who was engaged to Priya Sharma (Fiona Wade). She later left the village and returned to Scotland in 2021; however, her name has since often cropped up in conversations among the characters.

Especially at the moment, as Debbie’s mum Charity was recently sent to prison following the death of evil Dr Caitlin Todd (Caroline Harker) - who both raped and blackmailed Charity.

Fan reactions and actress's stance

And with all the drama going down for Debbie’s family at the moment, fans have been longing to see the character make a comeback. But in a sad twist, fans think she could be recast.

“Wish they would bring back Debbie,” said one person on an Emmerdale Facebook fan page. Predicting a recast, someone else said: “Got a feeling they will recast her soon, to be honest.” Echoing their thoughts, a third agreed: “I agree.” Another fan also chimed in and penned: “I personally think they should just recast her.”

Earlier this year, Charley shut down a return to the soap. While appearing on Luke Hamnett's podcast, Live, Laugh, Luke, she said: "Not at the moment, no."

"There are no plans for me to go back, just because I think it wouldn't be the right time, and having three kids is a lot, and also working there is a lot."

In the same podcast chat, Charley also confessed something she doesn't like about her Dales alter-ego. "I hate that name, by the way, it's the worst name!" the former soap star confessed.

Emmerdale airs Monday to Friday at 8:00pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
