Emmerdale has confirmed that Samson Dingle (Sam Hall) is being released from prison, leaving his dad, Sam Dingle (James Hooton), ecstatic. During Tuesday's (October 14) visit to the Dale, Sam delivered an unexpected update regarding his son Samson, as Vinny (Bradley Johnson) finds himself imprisoned alongside him.
As fans of the ITV soap will know, Vinny received a 10-year sentence after admitting guilt to causing death by dangerous driving following a devastating car collision that claimed the lives of Jimmy King (Nick Miles) and Dawn Fletcher (Olivia Bromley). After his initial evening in custody, Mandy Dingle (Lisa Riley) learned that Vinny's imprisonment had commenced disastrously, as he'd already been assaulted by a fellow prisoner.
Samson's support role in prison
The facility assured Mandy that Vinny is making a good recovery following the assault, but she worried that he simply won't manage to survive incarceration over the long haul. "At least Samson is there helping him from now on," Belle (Eden Taylor-Draper) comforted Mandy before she received another devastating setback.
Sam revealed that Samson and Vinny were housed in separate sections of the facility, leaving him with minimal protection. "He's on a different wing, he said he's going to ask around and see if he can find someone to keep an eye out for him," Sam stated before his wife, Lydia (Karen Blick), added: "He's had his release date through, and he's going to be coming home in a couple of weeks."
Family reaction to release news
The revelation left Mandy deeply moved as she confessed to feeling envious of Samson's impending release, reports the Daily Star. Subsequently, Sam and Lydia voiced their delight regarding Samson's return home. "I can't believe he's going to be home soon," Sam declared, with Lydia proposing they mark the occasion with a visit to the pub.
Nevertheless, the contented pair acknowledged that Moira Dingle (Natalie J Robb) would be far from pleased about Samson coming back and residing in the same household at Wishing Well Cottage.
Why is Samson Dingle in prison?
Samson's troubles commenced after he befriended troublemaker Josh Cope (Osian Morgan) in 2024. In a disturbing storyline, Josh subjected Moira's son Matty Barton (Ash Palmisciano) to transphobic abuse during an evening at The Hide before matters escalated to violence. After they returned inside, Josh insisted on money from the till while Matty held a kitchen knife. Josh subsequently pushed Samson in Matty's direction, resulting in Samson being accidentally stabbed.
Instead of revealing what had actually occurred, Samson corroborated Josh's fabricated version and informed police that Matty had deliberately assaulted him, though the falsehood carried severe ramifications. Matty faced charges over the stabbing and was held in custody, where he grew progressively anxious about his well-being as a transgender man.
In a massive betrayal of the Dingle clan, Samson maintained his version of events despite mounting pressure from relatives to tell the truth. It was his stepmother, Lydia, who ultimately uncovered his deception after spotting him with Josh and learning of Matty's dire struggles behind bars.
Following weeks of dishonesty, Samson finally came clean, acknowledging to his family that Matty's account was accurate, before confessing everything to the authorities. Matty was subsequently released from prison, leaving Samson to face the consequences of his actions, while his relationship with Josh simultaneously fell apart.
In August 2024, Samson finally confronted his former friend, only to assault him and was later arrested inside The Woolpack. The very next day, he received a four-year custodial sentence for obstruction of justice, having falsely claimed that Matty had deliberately stabbed him in a bid to shield his friend Josh.
Samson's parting scenes depicted his father Sam sharing a tearful farewell before he was escorted away to begin his sentence. Samson said: "I'm really sorry I let you down, Dad. I've been a rubbish son, haven't I?". Sam attempted to comfort him, saying: "If you keep your head down, you could be out in two years for good behaviour."
The ITV soap has yet to confirm an exact date for Samson's release.
