EastEnders fans spot clue Lee is lying about Jess after mystery call

EastEnders fans think Lee Carter could be hiding a huge secret about his mysterious ex Jess after spotting a major flaw in his story. Lee, played by Danny Hatchard, recently returned to Walford alongside his sister Nancy Carter (Maddy Hill), with the pair becoming embroiled in a dramatic surrogacy storyline.

Lee's story questioned

Nancy is carrying a baby for Lee and his partner Jess after the couple reportedly suffered multiple miscarriages. However, things have gone badly wrong between Lee and Jess, with Nancy revealing that the pair have now split. Lee has told his family that Jess walked away from their relationship, while he has made it clear that he wants to raise the baby without her. But fans are now questioning whether Lee has been completely honest about what really happened.

Mystery phone call

During a tense phone call, Jess contacted Lee, prompting him to tell her: “Why are you calling me? I ain't telling you where I am. My family and this baby have nothing to do with you anymore.” He then added: “Don't call me again, Jess,” before hanging up. The mysterious exchange has left viewers scratching their heads, particularly because Lee has previously made it sound as though Jess was the one who ended their relationship. And if she really wanted nothing more to do with him, why is she still trying to contact him?

Fan theories

Taking to Reddit, one fan questioned: “I'm also intrigued on what Lee is hiding from Nancy did he lie to Nancy about Jess leaving him etc because then why would she be calling him.” Another viewer wrote: “I think lee is telling the truth but theres more too it than her just leaving like that.” A third fan even wondered whether Jess could have been abusive, although there is currently no evidence in the show to support that theory.

Meanwhile, viewers are also convinced there could be a much bigger twist behind Jess' mysterious identity. Some fans have previously predicted that she could secretly be Janine Butcher (Charlie Brooks), who has a long history with the Carter family. Janine was once engaged to Lee's dad Mick Carter (Danny Dyer) and famously used the alias Judith Bernstein during her time on the Square. One fan has even suggested that Janine's reported return to Walford could tie into the mystery surrounding Jess. However, none of the theories have been confirmed by EastEnders, and Jess' identity remains a mystery.

Linda's determination

What is clear is that Linda Carter (Kellie Bright) is now determined to find out exactly what happened between her son and his former partner. After Lee admitted he no longer had Jess' number, Linda suggested they track her down, something which could put even more pressure on Lee to reveal what he has really been hiding. And with Nancy now carrying the couple's baby, whatever Lee isn't telling his family could have huge consequences for the future of the unborn child.
