Corrie fans predict Debbie's death after toaster incident

Coronation Street fans have predicted a horror accident for Debbie Webster ahead of her soap exit next year. Debbie (Sue Devaney) made her debut on the long-running ITV soap in 1984 as Kevin's (Michael Le Vell) sister.

She left a year later, only to return in 2019, and has become a firm favourite with fans over the years. However, the beloved businesswoman has had a difficult past 12 months on the cobbles. Firstly, she was diagnosed with vascular dementia and then ended up spending time in prison following a car crash in Corriedale earlier this year.

As well as that, she revealed that Carl Webster (Jonathan Howard) is not actually her brother but her biological son, sending shockwaves through the family.

Dementia storyline worsens

In recent episodes, Debbie's dementia appears to have worsened, with on-screen son Jonathan Howard recently revealing the end date for the heartbreaking storyline: August next year.

This week, Debbie even ended up putting herself in danger, as after making toast, she became frustrated and started poking a knife into the toaster. Fortunately, her husband, Ronnie, caught her in time and ripped the plug out of the socket.

However, Debbie couldn't help but feel like Ronnie was patronising her. Later on, he spoke to Asha Alahan (Tanisha Gorey) about looking and caring for Debbie, and she urged him to go to a dementia support group alone.

Fans fear fatal accident

This potential near-fatal incident mirrors a past ordeal that happened on the cobbles when former character Lesley Kershaw (Judy Holt) electrocuted herself to death with a toaster in May 2012. Like Debbie, Lesley suffered from vascular dementia.

And now, fans can't help but think that the soap has hinted at Debbie's looming death. On a Coronation Street Facebook fan page, one person said: “Do we think Debbie will end up in some sort of accident and die? Like when she just nearly electrocuted herself?”

Other people agreed, as a second chimed in: “So sad, but I can see something like that happening.” Another fan penned: “Same here.” A fourth person wrote: “I hope not!”

Exit date revealed

Earlier this year, Jonathan Howard told The Sun when Debbie could be departing the soap. He said: “Sue is contracted to August, but already they are ramping up the dementia storyline.

“It’s going to be very sad, so sad, I love Sue so much. I’m so happy she gets to play my mum and I get to play her son.”

Coronation Street airs Monday to Friday at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
