Coronation Street fans have admitted to 'bawling' over Kit Green's latest scenes as they shared how they'd made a U-turn in their verdict of the character as his heartbreaking cancer storyline plays out in the long-running show.
In recent episodes of the ITV soap, which is filmed in Salford, DC Kit Green (played by Jacob Roberts) was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer, which had spread to his lymph nodes. The diagnosis also came off the back of the death of Kit's great-aunt, Celeste. Before she died, she made Kit's half-sister, Gemma Winter-Brown, aware that the family may carry the familial BRCA gene.
Cancer storyline and family impact
Carrying a familial BRCA (Breast Cancer) gene mutation means inheriting a harmful change in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes from a parent, which significantly raises your lifetime risk of developing certain cancers. The Coronation Street production team are working closely with Macmillan Cancer Support and Breast Cancer Now to accurately portray Kit’s cancer while raising awareness of the very real risks of the illness amongst men.
In the soap, Kit had been seen keeping the news of his diagnosis a secret and in scenes aired last month, doctors confirmed Kit's course of treatment and he was sent away with letters to give his family about the familial BRCA gene. As Bernie was already undergoing testing, Kit kept quiet. However, he eventually told her the truth in emotional scenes. He dropped the bombshell when she continued to remain positive about her results, with him telling her that he knew she had the gene, as he had been tested.
Emotional scenes and fan reactions
Kit ended up apologising to Bernie for not telling her sooner, and Bernie vowed that they were all in it together. Kit then later bluntly delivered the news to the rest of his family, including son Brody Michaelis, but it was only last week that Kit shared the news at work, after leaving Lisa Connor-Swain at her wits' end at the station. The news has since spread further, with Kit coming clean to Bethany Platt as she put pressure on him to help her mum, and his former partner, Sarah Platt, as she's set to face trial for the murder of Theo Silverton.
It was then in Monday's (October 12) edition of Corrie that there were emotional scenes as Kit was seen preparing to start his cancer treatment. Having decided to shave his head before losing his hair, Brody joined his father at the flat in a moving show of support. Later, at the hospital, Kit was joined by Bernie as his treatment got underway, with the pair seen reminiscing about his childhood.
Fans change their verdict
Following a number of emotional scenes in the episode, which later included Brody referring to Kit as 'dad' for the first time before the pair tightly embraced, Corrie fans were seen commenting about having a change of heart about Kit's character.
