Apprentice Candidates Defy Lord Sugar Over 'Undeserved' Triple Firing
In a dramatic turn of events on The Apprentice, Lord Sugar made history by firing three candidates in a single episode, sparking fierce backlash from the eliminated contestants. The business mogul's unprecedented decision came after what he described as the worst performance in the show's corporate away-day tasks over two decades.
Historic Elimination Sparks Controversy
Typically, The Apprentice features double firings midway through the series, but this marks the first time Lord Sugar has opted to dismiss three candidates outside of the interview stages. The latest episode saw contestants travel to Egypt to organise a corporate away day for clients, with teams tasked to cut costs creatively to turn a profit.
Only one team, led by account manager Priyesh Bathia, managed to generate any revenue. In contrast, clothing brand owner Megan Ruiter's team incurred a loss of 290 Egyptian pounds. Their clients, expecting a leisurely walk, were instead forced to kayak to dinner, arriving two hours late and soaking wet. To make matters worse, they were served raw potato wedges as a starter, cooked by online loungewear business owner Carrington Saunders.
Fired Contestants Voice Their Discontent
Ruiter brought Saunders and lettings agency owner Andrea Cooper into the boardroom, accusing Cooper of excessive negativity during the task. Lord Sugar, visibly exasperated, gave the trio minimal opportunity to defend themselves before delivering the firings. He told Ruiter, "The biggest mistake was you took on this task, Megan. On the basis that you are experienced and have done corporate events, for that reason, I've got to tell you, Megan, you are fired."
When Ruiter stood to leave, Sugar angrily instructed her to sit down, continuing, "Carrington, I'm not satisfied with your explanations, so you're also fired. And you [Andrea], I don't like people who are negative, so you're fired also. So all three of you are fired."
Candidates Argue Against the Decision
Saunders and Cooper have since publicly criticised Sugar's ruling. Saunders told DailyMail, "I don't think I deserved to be fired. I made a mistake. The show isn't based on your cooking skills, it is based on your business skills." She acknowledged the high refunds but maintained her dismissal was unjust.
Cooper echoed this sentiment, stating, "I don't think the reasoning for me being fired was accurate. I don't think I were negative. I'm not a negative person. I'm a very positive person. I feel that a lot of inexperienced people in business see it as being negative when actually it's just about being a business person."
Ruiter conceded she "deserved" to be fired "in a sense" as project manager but denied full responsibility for the refunds. She highlighted, "If it wasn't for the refunds, we actually would have won the task and that amount of money that we secured from the client – that was down to myself, and for knowing the experience that I've got within the events industry."
The Apprentice continues to air on Thursdays at 9pm on BBC One, with this episode setting a new benchmark for dramatic eliminations in the series' history.
