Nicholas Ralph, best known for playing vet James Herriot in Channel 5's period drama All Creatures Great and Small, has appeared in two other popular television series. The Scottish actor, 36, has been a staple of the programme since it first aired in 2020 alongside Rachel Shenton, Samuel West, Anna Madeley and Callum Woodhouse.
Outlander role
Outside his life in the fictional town of Darrowby, Ralph shared a string of images on Instagram from his time on the hit US show Outlander. He starred in the seventh series, which aired in 2024, as Jeremiah 'Jerry' MacKenzie, playing the father of Roger MacKenzie (Richard Rankin) in the episode.
Sharing the images on social media, the actor called it a 'pleasure' to be part of the cast. He was quick to comment that he is playing the dad of Roger, who is older than him.
Fan reaction
Fans were sent into a frenzy after seeing the images. One person said they were 'so excited' to see him in the show, stating it was as though he had 'jumped sets' from the war in All Creatures to the war in Outlander. Someone else was left screaming 'my vet' when they saw him, calling it 'wonderful', while another confessed it was like their 'TV worlds were colliding'.
As one fan told Nicholas it was a 'delight' to see him, another added it was a 'happy surprise' for him to be in Outlander.
Grantchester appearance
Ralph also made a guest appearance in the final series of Grantchester, which has already been broadcast in the US. UK fans will have to wait a little longer to see it. He portrays Rev. John Planer alongside Rishi Nair and a host of other vicars. His character is a missionary who has just returned to England following a stint overseas.
He crosses paths with Rishi, who plays Reverend Alphy Kotteram, during a weekend retreat for vicars at Bishop Grey's residence. Ralph posted several behind-the-scenes moments, including a photograph with actress Christie Russell-Brown, revealing they had attended drama school together. In his caption, he joked it was plainly 'meant to be' that they would end up on the programme together, having once dressed as Father Dougal and Mrs Doyle for Halloween.
Seventh series of All Creatures
Fans of All Creatures Great and Small have recently been given a sneak peek at what is in store for the next instalment as first-look images have emerged. The seventh series will introduce a fresh face to the programme as another vet joins the practice. Actor Caolan McCarthy is set to portray Granville Bennett in the upcoming series, with fans catching a glimpse of him alongside Nicholas, Samuel West as Siegfried Farnon and Callum Woodhouse as Tristan Farnon.
