After nearly six decades, fans of the legendary rock band ZZ Top are finally learning the true story behind the group's iconic name. The American rock trio, known for hits like 'La Grange' and 'Sharp Dressed Man', has kept fans guessing since their formation in 1969.
According to the band's official website, guitarist Billy Gibbons drew inspiration from musical giants such as B.B. King and Z.Z. Hill. Gibbons initially considered naming the band 'Z.Z. King', but felt it was too similar to the blues legend's name. He then reasoned that 'a king is going to the top', leading him to settle on 'ZZ Top'.
Gibbons founded ZZ Top in late 1969, bringing in bassist Dusty Hill and drummer Frank Beard shortly after. The trio remained together for an impressive 51 years until Hill's passing in 2021. Before forming ZZ Top, Gibbons had played in the band Moving Sidewalks, which opened for Jimi Hendrix during his first US tour as a headliner.
While the official explanation is widely accepted, alternative theories have circulated among fans. One popular theory suggests the name was inspired by Zig-Zag and Tops rolling papers, often used for rolling joints. However, the band has never confirmed this version.
Regardless of how the name originated, ZZ Top's distinctive sound and iconic beards have cemented their place in rock history. The band continues to perform and record, keeping their legacy alive for new generations of fans.
