In the western German city of Wuppertal, a former Second World War bunker has been converted into a nightclub that is drawing international acclaim for its exceptional acoustics. Open Ground, which opened in December 2023, has been hailed by DJs such as Floating Points and Mantra as possibly the best-sounding club in Europe.
The venue's remarkable audio quality is due to its acoustically treated walls, patented fibre panelling that absorbs disruptive reflections, and a powerful Funktion-One F132 sound system. The club’s founders, Markus Riedel and Mark Ernestus, bring over 80 years of combined experience in music retail and production. Riedel previously worked at the renowned Berlin record shop Hard Wax, while Ernestus is a pioneer of dub techno.
The transformation of the decommissioned bunker took seven years and was entirely privately financed by Riedel's brother Thomas, as part of the city's urban renewal efforts. Renovations included consolidating rooms, sawing out the concrete ceiling, and adapting the air conditioning to optimise the sound design. The result is a space that offers a 'monastic hush' before opening hours, with sound clarity that has been described as emotionally overwhelming.
Open Ground is located near Wuppertal's train station, a five-hour train ride from Berlin, yet it has become a pilgrimage site for nightlife enthusiasts. The club's commitment to sound quality is rooted in a belief that good acoustics are not a luxury but a health imperative, with Ernestus noting that poor audio can increase stress and cardiovascular risk.
