Suzi Quatro Discloses Intimate Moment with Alice Cooper from Their Youth
As she embarks on a 10-date UK tour, legendary musician Suzi Quatro has shared an exclusive revelation about a sliding doors moment with fellow rockstar and close friend Alice Cooper. In a candid interview, the 75-year-old Devil Gate Drive singer recounted a passionate kiss from her teenage years that nearly blossomed into love.
The Kiss That Almost Changed Everything
Suzi Quatro, who hails from Detroit, Michigan, like Alice Cooper, described the incident that occurred when she was around 19 years old. "We found ourselves alone in our hotel room and we had this big kiss, and it was a 'big kiss', you know?" she revealed. The Wild One singer explained that there has always been an underlying attraction between them, but they chose to prioritize their friendship.
"We've always been close and there's always been that underlying thing of fancying each other," Suzi confessed. "As is often the way with good friends, you could go that way but you don't want to… and we actually did." She emphasized that both decided to pull back, believing that maintaining their bond was more important than pursuing a romantic relationship.
Enduring Friendship and Professional Collaboration
Despite the near-miss, Suzi and Alice have remained great pals and continued to work together extensively. Recently, they reunited to record a cover of the MC5 classic Kick Out The Jams for Suzi's new album, Freedom. Suzi noted, "He calls me his little sister. We're pretty similar. When you hear interviews of his and interviews of mine, we kind of have the same attitude to the business. We respect each other, we're very similar in character."
Their friendship dates back to the 1970s when Suzi was spotted by record producer Mickie Most and brought to England to launch her solo career. Since then, she has sold over 55 million records. During an 85-date tour together in 1975, Suzi witnessed Alice fall in love with his now-wife, dancer Sheryl, describing the couple as "so happy together."
Humorous Anecdotes from the Road
Beyond the romantic tension, Suzi shared a lighter memory from the 1975 tour, where she almost broke Alice's nose during a rubber dart-gun fight. "I saw his rather large nose poking out from behind a television set, and I went 'boink!'" she laughed, recalling how the dart struck him squarely. Alice's response was "Ouch!" followed by "Good shot!" That night, he wore her tour T-shirt onstage as a sign of respect.
Suzi Quatro, who lives in Chelmsford, Essex, with her husband Rainer Haas, continues to reflect on these moments with fondness. Her new album, Freedom, is set for release on March 27, and her UK tour begins on April 7, marking another chapter in her storied career.
