Stone Roses' Mani dies aged 63

The UK music scene is in mourning following the announcement that Gary 'Mani' Mounfield, the iconic bassist for The Stone Roses and Primal Scream, has died at the age of 63.

A Pillar of the Madchester Sound

Mani's distinctive bass lines were the backbone of The Stone Roses, helping to define the sound of a generation. His career with the seminal Manchester band spanned their most influential years, including their legendary performance to 27,000 people in Widnes, Cheshire, in 1990.

He was a key part of the classic line-up, performing alongside Ian Brown, John Squire, and Alan 'Reni' Wren. The band's impact was captured in images from their peak, such as their appearance at the Futurama festival in Belgium in October 1989 and a studio photoshoot in London in July 1990.

From Roses to Scream: A Lasting Legacy

After The Stone Roses initially disbanded, Mani's talent found a new home with Primal Scream in the late 1990s. He became an integral part of the band, performing with them for over a decade at iconic venues like Brixton Academy in London in 2006 and 2011.

His passion for music extended beyond performing, as he was also an avid DJ, seen spinning records at London's famed 100 Club in 2003.

A Life Beyond the Stage

Mani was a well-known and beloved figure in Manchester and beyond, with interests that stretched into fashion and football. He was photographed at the Champions League final at Wembley in May 2011 and attended London Fashion Week in June 2018 with former bandmate John Squire and David Beckham.

More recently, he was seen alongside Liam Gallagher at Ricky Hatton’s funeral in Manchester in October 2025. He also attended the premiere of The Stone Roses: Made of Stone documentary in Manchester in May 2013 with his wife, Imelda.

The news of his passing was confirmed on Thursday, November 20, 2025. Gary 'Mani' Mounfield, 1962-2025, leaves behind an indelible mark on British music culture.
