Reality TV personality Sam Faiers has come under fire after making controversial claims about sunscreen, stating she doesn't use SPF products on her three young children because she believes they contain harmful ingredients.
Dermatologists Sound the Alarm
Leading skin specialists have expressed horror at Faiers' remarks, calling her stance "irresponsible" and "dangerously misinformed". Dr. Emma Wedgeworth, a consultant dermatologist, told Daily Mail: "There is absolutely no scientific evidence to support claims that sunscreen causes harm when used appropriately."
The Celebrity's Controversial Stance
The former TOWIE star made the shocking admission during a Q&A session on her Instagram Stories. When asked about her family's sun protection routine, Faiers responded: "We don't really wear sunscreen... I don't like the ingredients in most brands."
She went on to suggest alternative methods like seeking shade and wearing protective clothing, while dismissing concerns about skin cancer risks.
Why Experts Are Worried
Medical professionals have highlighted several concerns about Faiers' position:
- Children's skin is particularly vulnerable to UV damage
- UK melanoma rates have risen 137% since the 1990s
- Early sun exposure significantly increases cancer risk later in life
Dr. Wedgeworth added: "This kind of misinformation could have serious consequences if followed by her many young fans and followers."
The Science Behind SPF
Modern sunscreens undergo rigorous testing to ensure safety. The British Association of Dermatologists states:
- Chemical filters in sunscreen break down UV rays
- Mineral options (zinc/titanium dioxide) provide physical barriers
- Both types are safe for children when formulated appropriately
Public Health England recommends using at least SPF30 sunscreen on all exposed skin, especially for children.
