In a candid new interview published on Friday, acclaimed singer Raye has made a striking declaration about her creative process, revealing she will not write any songs for her upcoming third album until she falls in love. The 28-year-old artist, speaking as part of The Sunday Times Young Power List 2026, detailed this personal "silent protest" while also confessing to intense career pressures that drive her to work relentlessly.
A Creative Standstill for Love
Just weeks after releasing her second album, This Music May Contain Hope, Raye is already contemplating her next musical project. However, she has imposed a firm condition on its creation. "My third album, I think I've named it already," she stated. "It's going to be called And Then She Fell in Love. And I'm not writing a single song—be it one year, five years, ten years—until that chapter of my life begins. That's my silent protest."
This artistic hiatus, however, contrasts sharply with her demanding professional schedule. Raye admitted she has little time for dating as she relentlessly tours, promotes her latest album, and maintains a grueling work pace. "I think we're in an age where you can feel like if you stop, no one's going to care, or it's all going to be over," she explained. "And because I've worked so hard to get to this point, part of you is like—'feed the machine. Feed the beast.'"
From Industry Struggles to Chart Triumph
Raye's current success follows a long and arduous journey in the music business. Born Rachel Agatha Keen, she initially signed a four-record deal with Polydor in 2014 but faced years of frustration as album releases were repeatedly delayed or shelved. She has spoken openly about feeling creatively stifled and marginalized during that period, which led her to reach a "breaking point."
After breaking away from her label, Raye rebuilt her career independently, partnering with the distribution label Human Re Sources and seizing full control of her music. This pivotal move allowed her to release songs on her own terms and reconnect authentically with fans. She now operates with a small team that "meet in her living room," embracing her status as an independent artist.
Reflecting on Past Challenges
Reflecting on her earlier struggles, Raye revealed she turned to drugs and alcohol to cope, but ultimately sought to "be a person who's in control of my life." Her determination has since yielded spectacular results. From critical acclaim for her debut album 21st Century Blues to record-breaking wins at the Brit Awards, her comeback story has captivated the pop world.
This year, Raye kicked off with a chart triumph when her single Where Is My Husband became the first UK singles chart Number One of 2026, finally reaching the top spot after a 15-week climb. This achievement underscores her resilience and the payoff of her independent path, making her journey one of the most discussed narratives in contemporary music.
