Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan Face Off in New Video

Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan face off on a fictional game show hosted by Talking Heads frontman David Byrne in a new music video. Rodrigo, 23, released a new version of her song Expectations on Friday featuring Roan, 28, along with an accompanying visual where the singers competed on The Big Expectations Show.

Video Features 80s and 90s Costumes and Cameos

Along with 80s- and 90s-inspired costumes, the video included a cameo from Byrne, 74, who played a fictional host named Johnny Johnson, as well as from her music producer Dan Nigro, 44. At the beginning of the video, Roan says “Oh, Olivia does remixes now,” before the pair go head to head on Sister Squabble – a take on the US game show, Family Feud.

Roan's New Verse and First Feature

The remixed version includes a new verse from Roan, who sings about being ghosted by a woman she took out on a date. Roan sings: “She said she’d call me later, that was three weeks ago. Classic LA behaviour, (she could’ve just said no).”

In an interview with Zane Lowe, Roan explained: “Well, obviously I love making things a little gay so it was fun to just be like girl vibes. This is my first feature. I’ve never done this before. So it feels perfect to me. It felt so natural to settle in because I was like this is so real. Like damn my expectations of people is so valid. I scored the verse about being stood up and I mean, that was made up. When I was dating boys is when I got ghosted.”

Rodrigo's Praise and Recent Releases

The original song was released earlier this year on Rodrigo’s third studio album, You Seem Pretty Sad For A Girl So In Love. The song comes weeks after Roan headlined Rodrigo’s Daisy Chain Fields festival in August.

Rodrigo said on Instagram: “I love this song and this vid so much! Chappell is the most incredible person and the most inspiring artist and I am so lucky to be able to learn from her and call her a friend. Getting to make art with people you love is the best feeling ever.”

Rodrigo went on to thank Roan and Nigro, songwriter Amy Allen and video director Bardia Zeinali for “helping bring this vision to life”. She added: “Huge shoutout to David Byrne for the most incredible cameo ever!!! I’ve got big expectations baby!!!!!!”

Rodrigo – known for the songs Deja Vu, Vampire and Good 4 U – released her debut album Sour in 2021, which climbed to the top of the UK charts and won the best pop vocal album and best new artist Grammy in 2022. Two years later, she released her second chart-topping album Guts, which included the songs So American, Obsessed and Bad Idea Right.
