Newcastle Airport seeks new airlines after Loganair cancels routes

Newcastle Airport is preparing to hold talks with alternative carriers to revive axed routes after Loganair announced it is scrapping two of its regular services. The Scottish airline confirmed this week that it is withdrawing flights between Newcastle Airport and Southampton and Exeter, as part of efforts to "support the long-term resilience of the airline".

Routes to end on 24 October

Loganair's flights to both destinations are due to cease next week on 24 October, leaving the operator with just a single service from the region – Newcastle to Jersey. As affected passengers were being notified of the cancellations, Newcastle Airport chiefs expressed their dismay at the development.

However, the vital travel hub is eager to see the routes reinstated under a different operator. A Newcastle Airport spokesperson said: "We have been informed that Loganair will not be operating its services from Newcastle Airport to Southampton and Exeter beyond 24th October 2026. This is disappointing news and we will be exploring opportunities with airlines to reinstate these routes where possible."

Loganair's history at Newcastle

Founded in 1962 with a single aircraft, Loganair has since grown to become the UK's largest regional airline. It officially launched services from Newcastle in 2019 and over the past seven years has operated routes to numerous destinations, including Aberdeen, the Norwegian coastal city of Bergen, and the Channel Islands destination of Guernsey.

Jersey will now remain its only destination from Newcastle; however, the firm's online booking system reveals no available flights from Newcastle to the largest of the Channel Islands between 18 October and 10 January, with the final service on 18 October routed via Southampton. The airline has been approached for comment on whether additional flights will be added to the schedule, but is yet to respond.

Airline statement on cancellations

A Loganair spokesperson said: "As part of our ongoing network reviews, we can confirm that our Newcastle–Southampton and Newcastle–Exeter services have been cancelled. We continually review our flying programme to ensure our network reflects customer demand and supports the long-term resilience of the airline.

"This enables us to focus our aircraft and resources where they can deliver the greatest benefit for customers and the communities we serve. Customers with affected bookings are being contacted directly with their available options. We apologise for any inconvenience and thank customers for their understanding as we continue to strengthen our wider network."
