Nigella Lawson Joins The Great British Bake Off as New Judge
Seasoned cookery expert Nigella Lawson has been announced as the new judge on The Great British Bake Off, stepping into the role previously held by Dames Mary Berry and Prue Leith. In her first interview since landing the position, Lawson, 66, admitted feeling daunted by the prospect of judging amateur bakers, but co-judge Paul Hollywood, who turns 60 next week, praised her "unbelievable taste buds" and predicted she will excel.
Bonding Over Bread and Blushes
Lawson and Hollywood met for the first time this week, quickly bonding over a shared love of Italian bread. During their conversation, Lawson revealed they were "told off in the corridor for talking about focaccia too naughtily," a comment that caused Hollywood to blush. She clarified that this was not a euphemism, highlighting the playful dynamic already developing between the pair.
Lawson's Approach to Baking and Judging
Known for her emphasis on pleasure and enjoyment in cooking, Lawson described baking as a mix of "poetry and chemistry," stressing that while precision is essential, imagination must also have a place. As a judge, she aims to focus on encouragement and delight rather than fault-finding. "I look for pleasure and not for fault," she said, adding that her body lets her know which cake or pie she would like a second slice of.
Hollywood's Endorsement and Show's Appeal
Hollywood, who has been with the show for 17 years, expressed confidence in Lawson's abilities, noting her respected taste buds and knowledge. He also reflected on the show's enduring popularity, attributing it to the cozy, village fete atmosphere of the tent and the supportive community among bakers. Lawson echoed this, stating that Bake Off appeals emotionally to viewers by fostering a sense of connection and safety.
Practical Preparations and Future Plans
Lawson joked about needing elasticated trousers for the tasting sessions, while Hollywood mentioned considering "pregnancy pants." Both judges plan to do some baking behind the scenes, though Lawson acknowledged her clumsiness and vowed to avoid interfering with contestants. They also discussed potential culinary exchanges, with Hollywood offering to make focaccia and Lawson suggesting a rhubarb plate pie.
The Great British Bake Off is set to return to Channel 4 later this year, with Lawson bringing her unique blend of warmth and expertise to the tent.
