Morgan Freeman Joins Warburtons' Celebrity Roster for Milestone Anniversary Campaign
Academy Award-winning actor Morgan Freeman has become the latest A-list celebrity to feature in a Warburtons television advertisement, following in the footsteps of Hollywood heavyweights including Olivia Colman, Robert De Niro, and George Clooney. The 88-year-old screen legend has contributed his unmistakable, honeyed vocal tones to a heartwarming new commercial titled 150-years in the Baking, created to commemorate the family-run bakery's remarkable sesquicentennial anniversary.
A Nostalgic Journey Through Baking History
The advertisement opens with Jonathan Warburton, the company's Chairman and fifth-generation family member, seated at his desk within the bakery's Bolton headquarters. As he prepares to enjoy a warm, buttered slice of Toastie loaf, Freeman's rich narration begins, guiding viewers on an emotional voyage through the brand's 150-year legacy. The narrative traces Warburtons' evolution from its inaugural loaf baked in 1876 right through to contemporary operations, exploring the family's profound dedication to the art of baking.
Freeman's signature wry charm establishes the scene for this historical exploration, highlighting pivotal moments of bakery innovation while juxtaposing them against twentieth-century cultural milestones, including the iconic 1969 moon landing. The actor enumerates the brand's famous product range, stating: 'White bread, seeded bread, crumpets, toastie, wholemeal...'
Humorous Moments and Surprise Cameos
In a delightful and unexpected twist, the beloved literary character Paddington Bear makes a surprise cameo appearance, seen happily consuming one of his famous marmalade sandwiches. The advert's comedic highlight arrives when Freeman momentarily breaks character, pausing his narration to inquire 'what (the hell) a crumpet is', sparking a hilarious exchange with Jonathan Warburton about this quintessential British baked good.
Freeman questions whether a crumpet resembles a bagel and playfully labels the Warburton family 'crazy' upon learning their crumpets contain approximately 300 holes. This lighthearted moment underscores the advertisement's blend of celebrity appeal and authentic British humour.
Celebrating Family Legacy and Future Generations
As the narrative looks toward Warburtons' next 150 years and the impending handover of baking expertise to the sixth generation, a poignant scene depicts a 'Grandfather' Warburton, fresh from the bakery, tenderly cradling his newborn grandson in a hospital setting. The commercial concludes by transitioning to the modern era, showcasing a fleet of Warburtons delivery lorries in motion—a visual metaphor for a heritage British brand sustained through generations of unwavering commitment and heartfelt passion for baking.
Reflecting on his participation, Morgan Freeman remarked: 'Lending my voice to chronicle 150 years of this family's unwavering dedication to the simple, yet profound, act of baking... well, that's a narrative that truly deserves to be heard. Their commitment to quality baking, passed down through generations, shines through, making it abundantly clear why they've remained a beloved household name for so long. And I confess, I found myself quite taken by that crumpet – 300 holes, I told you these Warburtons were crazy!'
Warburtons' Star-Studded Advertising Heritage
Warburtons has cultivated a renowned reputation for enlisting major celebrities alongside Chairman Jonathan Warburton in humorous, high-profile campaigns that promote their bread products. Previous campaigns have featured stars such as Olivia Colman, Samuel L. Jackson, George Clooney, Sylvester Stallone, and Peter Kay, consistently emphasising themes of quality, family heritage, and British baking through playful and memorable storylines.
In the most recent campaign prior to Freeman's involvement, Olivia Colman portrayed a stern official from a fictitious Department of National Treasures, conducting a mock investigation of the bakery to justify a large-scale crumpet heist in the 2025 advertisement titled The Inspection. George Clooney's 2021 advert depicted the actor attempting to contact Jonathan Warburton to pitch an idea, only to have his call overlooked in favour of a timely snack of toast. Clooney accepted the role on condition that his substantial fee be donated to the charitable foundation he operates with his wife, Amal.
Robert De Niro starred in a 2019 commercial, channelling his iconic gangster roles from films like Goodfellas as he travelled from New York to Bolton to confront Jonathan about the brand's new bagels, ultimately attempting to sabotage and rebrand them as 'GoodBagels'. Sylvester Stallone made his Warburtons debut in 2015, appearing as a tough, action-hero style delivery driver in a cinematic advertisement inspired by his Rocky franchise. The bakery has also collaborated with The Muppets for a two-minute Christmas special.
Jonathan Warburton commented on the new campaign: 'As gross as it may well sound, baking truly is in our blood. This is more than just an advert; it's a celebration of 150 years of simply doing what we love – baking delicious bread for British families. It's not every day you turn 150, and we wanted to mark this incredible milestone with everyone who's made us a part of their family's lives. And when it came to telling the story of our relentless passion for baking, well, who else could we possibly ask but the world's most recognisable storyteller and the voice of God himself, Morgan Freeman. He brings an epic and memorable scale to our history, making even our humble beginnings sound rather grand!'
The new Morgan Freeman-narrated advert will receive its official premiere on Saturday 14th February during The Masked Singer on ITV at 7pm.
