Julian Lloyd Webber Announces Prostate Cancer Diagnosis

Renowned cellist Julian Lloyd Webber, brother of composer Andrew Lloyd-Webber, has publicly announced his diagnosis with prostate cancer and his intention to commence treatment promptly. The musician, who recently celebrated his 75th birthday, disclosed this personal health news after performing at a charity gala concert at London's Wigmore Hall on Tuesday.

Secret Diagnosis and Birthday Performance

Julian Lloyd Webber chose to keep his cancer diagnosis confidential until after his birthday concert to avoid disappointing attendees and supporters. In a statement, he explained, 'I did not want to let anyone down so I kept my diagnosis secret until after my birthday concert, but now I need to begin treatment as soon as possible.' He expressed optimism about his recovery, noting encouragement from his medical team and a commitment to fulfilling his professional engagements without cancellation.

Return to the Stage After Injury

This concert marked a significant return for Lloyd Webber, ending a 12-year absence from the concert platform due to a severe injury. He suffered from a herniated disc in his right arm, caused by the repetitive bowing motion of cello playing, which was so debilitating that he sold his Stradivarius instrument, believing he would never perform again.

However, in a remarkable comeback, he began relearning to play last year, starting with basic scales and gradually building up his endurance. Speaking to the Observer ahead of his return, he shared, 'I began just playing scales a few weeks ago. I tried a whole piece, but quickly realised it was not going to work. I had to build up to it. So I did 15 minutes, then half an hour. Then I managed an hour. Now I can't wait for the concert. I just hope I can do it.'

Career Highlights and Recognition

Julian Lloyd Webber has had a distinguished career, including performing at the closing ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics and winning a Brit Award for his recording of Edward Elgar's Cello Concerto. In recognition of his contributions to music, he was appointed an OBE in 2021.

As he embarks on his cancer treatment, Lloyd Webber has stated he will not comment further on the matter until after the process is complete, focusing instead on his health and ongoing musical commitments.
