Jamie Oliver Joins CMAT for 'The Jamie Oliver Petrol Station' Music Video
Jamie Oliver, the renowned TV chef, has made a surprise appearance in the music video for CMAT's indie pop track 'The Jamie Oliver Petrol Station'. The collaboration stems from the song's exploration of irrational hatred, which Oliver initially misunderstood but later embraced for its creative depth.
From Confusion to Creative Partnership
When Jamie Oliver first heard the song, he was puzzled, wondering what he had done to inspire such lyrics. 'I couldn't really work it out,' he admitted. However, after his daughters and their friends expressed enthusiasm for the track, his perspective shifted. The song, featured on CMAT's third album Euro-Country, uses Oliver's face on Shell petrol station salads as a metaphor for misdirected anger in a confusing world.
In February, on CMAT's 30th birthday, Oliver followed her on Instagram, leading to an invitation to film the video. Within two days, they were shooting at the new Leicester Square location of Jamie's Italian, a restaurant chain revived after its 2019 collapse. 'When CMAT asked me to be in the video, I was 100% in,' Oliver stated, highlighting his respect for the creative arts.
Behind the Scenes of the Video Shoot
The music video debuted at CMAT's headlining show at London's Alexandra Palace. It alternates between CMAT and her band performing in a 60s-style studio and Oliver navigating a stressful kitchen day. In a whimsical twist, Oliver spots CMAT on a TV screen, leading to an escapist fantasy where she appears in his empty restaurant as he drums along to the song's climax.
Oliver, who previously drummed for his band Scarlet Division, impressed CMAT with his skills. 'He's still got it behind the kit,' she remarked. The shoot was chaotic, occurring during staff training week with unfinished decorations, but Oliver found it enjoyable, bonding with CMAT over food and music.
Reflections on the Collaboration
Oliver explained his involvement with Shell sandwiches as an effort to improve food-on-the-go options. He now understands CMAT's song as a commentary on making assumptions without full context. 'We all live in a world where we make assumptions without understanding the whole picture,' he noted, hoping CMAT finds him less annoying now.
CMAT, known for her vibrant pop style, praised Oliver's team for their hospitality. As for future collaborations, she hinted at a possible appearance in Oliver's next festive special, saying, 'I believe my invite is in the post.'
