In a startling revelation during a live performance, multi-talented artist Donald Glover disclosed that he suffered a stroke last year, forcing the cancellation of his highly anticipated world tour.
The Shocking On-Stage Announcement
While performing at Tyler, the Creator's Camp Flog Gnaw festival in Los Angeles on Saturday night, the 42-year-old musician and actor shared his health crisis with the audience. Glover explained that during his Childish Gambino world tour, he experienced a severe headache while in Louisiana but decided to power through the performance despite vision problems.
The artist, known for his work under the stage name Childish Gambino, described how the situation escalated. "I couldn't really see well, so when we went to Houston, I went to the hospital and the doctor was like, 'You had a stroke,'" Glover told the captivated audience.
Medical Complications and Surgery
The health issues didn't stop with the stroke diagnosis. Medical professionals discovered additional serious conditions that required immediate attention. Doctors found a hole in Glover's heart that necessitated surgical intervention, which he underwent twice.
Adding to his physical challenges, Glover also revealed he had broken one of his feet during this difficult period. The combination of these health problems led to the complete cancellation of his remaining tour dates across the US, UK, Europe and Australia.
Tour Cancellations and Emotional Impact
Earlier this year, Glover had initially described dealing with an unspecified "ailment" after his New Orleans performance. His subsequent hospital visit in Houston uncovered the need for surgery, prompting him to first postpone and then completely cancel the remainder of his global tour commitments.
In a poignant moment during his LA performance, Glover reflected on the experience, stating: "They say everybody has two lives and the second life starts when you realise you have one. You got one life, guys, and I gotta be honest, the life I've lived with you guys has been such a blessing."
The five-time Grammy award winner had been touring to support his final album as Childish Gambino, "Bando Stone & the New World," marking the official retirement of his famous stage name. The cancelled tour was intended as his farewell to the Childish Gambino persona that brought him international acclaim.
