The funeral mass for celebrated folk singer Dolores Keane took place on Friday at St Patrick and St Cuana Church in Kilcoona, County Galway, where mourners gathered to honour a woman whose voice brought "joy and comfort to the hearts of so many." Keane, a former member of the renowned De Dannan group, passed away at her home on Monday at the age of 72, leaving behind a profound legacy in Irish music and culture.

He reflected on her deep roots in the local community, stating, "Within this parish and community she found the love and support that enabled her to share her gift with the world. We have been proud and privileged over many years to call her one of our own."

Symbols representing Keane's life were presented during the ceremony, including her concertina, an honorary doctorate from the University of Galway, and a tea cup symbolising cherished moments with her "beloved" children and grandchildren. Distinguished Mourners and Family Reflections

The service was attended by notable figures, including President Catherine Connolly, former President Michael D Higgins, and the Taoiseach's aide Commandant Joe Glennon. Speaking on behalf of the family, Keane's brother Matt expressed gratitude for their presence, noting that President Connolly's attendance conveyed "admiration for Dolores." He described Higgins as a long-time friend, with a relationship spanning 30 to 40 years, and acknowledged his support for the arts, particularly in the Galway region.

Matt Keane shared emotional memories, calling his sister "the sister we loved to bits and often threatened to strangle... but now she is a sister that's going to leave a massive gap in our lives." He also praised a candlelight tribute held on Thursday night as "the most wonderful gesture I've ever seen."

A Legacy of Humility and Cultural Ambassadorship

Father Peter Gannon, a long-time family friend, delivered a moving eulogy, emphasising Keane's role as a cultural ambassador. "Dolores Keane died on the eve of St Patrick's Day, and over decades of life, she has been such a wonderful ambassador, universally, for a huge part of our tradition and culture," he said. He praised her humility, noting that despite her fame, "there wasn't a hint of airs or graces about Dolores."

Gannon added that Keane was "full of fun and wit," and humorously remarked, "If, up there in heaven, they have been accustomed to the quietness of early nights for rest, they can forget that now, because there's a lot of catching up to do, there's a lot of songs to be resurrected, and the heavenly choir has only got better." He also thanked the Keane family for preserving Irish traditions, stating that many songs "would be forever in the archives if it was not for you."

Final Resting Place and Surviving Family

Dolores Keane is survived by her son Joseph, daughter Tara, and partner Colin. She was laid to rest at Donaghpatrick Cemetery, concluding a service that celebrated not only her musical achievements but also her enduring impact on Irish identity and the hearts of fans globally. Her legacy continues to resonate through the timeless songs that have become soundtracks to significant life moments for countless individuals.
