American rap superstar Doja Cat has faced a storm of criticism from her Australian fanbase following a deeply underwhelming performance at a Melbourne nightclub. The event, which took place on Sunday night, left ticket holders feeling short-changed after waiting for hours for a performance that lasted just a quarter of an hour.
A Night of Letdowns at Ms Collins
The much-anticipated club show at the trendy Ms Collins venue turned sour when the artist, whose real name is Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini, kept the sell-out crowd waiting for a whopping three hours before appearing on stage. The anticipation quickly dissolved into frustration as, after performing only three songs, Doja Cat informed the audience she was 'losing her voice' and ended the gig after a mere 15 minutes.
One disillusioned fan, speaking to the Herald Sun after the anti-climactic event, did not hold back his feelings. 'I would have appreciated it if Doja Cat had communicated her situation earlier in the night and potentially even offered to DJ her own songs,' he stated, adding, 'I think the crowd would have appreciated at least seeing her on stage for more than 15 minutes. It was a let-down.'
Financial and Emotional Cost for Fans
The brief performance was particularly galling for supporters, some of whom had paid up to $130 for admission to what was her only club show on the Australian tour. The disappointment spilled over onto social media platform X on Monday, where one heartbroken fan wrote, '3 songs and so much money later, I'm heartbroken.' Another fan directed a message to the 'Say So' singer using the social media slang 'Pull up', implying a call for a challenging confrontation.
Amid the frustration, some fans shared images of the pop-rapper signing CDs during her fleeting appearance, a small consolation for an otherwise disastrous evening.
Tour Controversies and Upcoming Shows
This incident comes after Doja Cat initially excited fans by announcing her plans to tour Australia for stadium shows in November and December. However, the tour announcement was not without its own controversies. Fans in Adelaide were furious to discover that the South Australian capital had been omitted from the Aussie leg of her 'Ma Vie' World Tour stadium shows.
Social media was flooded with comments from disappointed Adelaide residents, with one person writing on Instagram, 'Of course, no Adelaide,' while others pleaded, 'Adelaide pls,' and 'We NEED an Adelaide show!'
Despite the club show debacle, the top-selling artist is scheduled to perform at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne on Tuesday. She will then continue her Australian stint with a performance at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre on Saturday, November 29, before wrapping up with two shows in Sydney at the Qudos Bank Arena on December 1 and 2.
