Deep Purple frontman Ian Gillan has been hospitalised following an undisclosed medical emergency, prompting the band to cancel two scheduled concerts in Germany.
The rock band announced the cancellation of their performances at the QI Arena in Leipzig on October 31 and the Sporthalle in Hamburg on November 1. Deep Purple said all purchased tickets will remain valid for rescheduled dates once new shows are arranged.
Band Statement on Cancellations
No further details on the 81-year-old singer's condition have been shared so far. "With great disappointment, Deep Purple must announce that they are unable to perform as scheduled tonight at the QI Arena (Leipzig) and tomorrow evening at the Sporthalle (Hamburg)," the band wrote on Instagram.
"This comes as a result of a medical emergency involving Ian Gillan, which has resulted in his current hospitalisation. We understand that this announcement comes at short notice and share the disappointment of all our wonderful fans that we are unable to perform in Leipzig and Hamburg."
Rescheduling Plans and Fan Reactions
Deep Purple and their team are focused on finding a suitable time to reschedule both shows. "All tickets purchased will be valid for the rescheduled dates. With the greatest love and respect... Deep Purple x," the statement added.
Many fans sent Ian their best wishes in the comment section of the band's post. "Thoughts and prayers for Ian and the band," a person wrote, as another commented: "Ian's health is more important than any show. Please ensure he has the best medical care and rest time possible."
"Wishing Ian a speedy recovery," a third posted, while someone else shared: "oh my god please be safe and get well soon." One more posted: "We are all with you, Ian, God bless your recovery."
Band Legacy and Tour Status
Deep Purple, formed in London in 1968, are widely celebrated as pioneers of modern hard rock and heavy metal. Alongside Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, they constituted the "unholy trinity" of British hard rock during the 1970s.
With over 100 million albums sold worldwide, the band is universally known for their definitive guitar riff on Smoke on the Water and their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016. While their concerts this weekend have been postponed, the rest of their world tour is slated to resume in Berlin on November 4.
