Clem Cattini dies at 89: Cause of death revealed

Legendary session drummer Clem Cattini, who played on more number one records than any other British drummer, has died at the age of 89. His cause of death was a fall at home, which occurred shortly after he returned from hospital following health issues.

The news was confirmed by songwriter David Stark in a Facebook post, who wrote: "I hate to be one of the bearers of such sad news but just learned we've lost the legendary drummer and raconteur Clem Cattini (89) who suffered a fall at home last night. This is especially sad as he only recently came out of hospital with diabetic issues but was on the mend and doing well. Sincere condolences to his wife Anna, daughter Giulia and all the family."

A Career Spanning Decades

Stark detailed Cattini's career, writing: "Clem was the greatest British session drummer of all time (he played on at least 42 No. 1 singles) as well as playing with many bands like the Tornados, Johnny Kidd & the Pirates, Lulu's Luvvers and the Rocky Horror Show touring cast among many others."

Cattini's first number one came as a member of Johnny Kidd & The Pirates, which topped the UK singles chart in August 1960. He co-founded the Tornados in 1961, and their instrumental "Telstar" spent five weeks at the top of the UK chart in 1962. The group became the first British band to top the US Billboard Hot 100 in December 1962.

Tributes from Music Icons

Tony Christie paid tribute in an emotional Facebook post, writing: "So very sad to hear that the great Clem Cattini, drummer of the Tornados and prolific session drummer, has passed away. Clem played on all my early MCA 1970's albums and all my hit singles, including Is This The Way To Amarillo. Not only a world-class musician but also a world-class gentleman. Proud to have known him. My condolences and love to his family."

1960s icon Donovan also remembered Cattini, sharing an image on Instagram with the caption: "I've just learned of the passing of Clem Cattini, a fantastic player from the Mickie Most sessions. Clem was the drummer on my hurdy-gurdy man, and played on so many hits. Love, respect and condolences to his family."

Emerson, Lake and Palmer star Carl Palmer shared: "Rest in peace Clem, you will always be remembered. The drummers all over the UK owe you a lot for opening the door for all of us. Thank you, my friend."
