In a surprising move that has resonated with fans, American rock band CKY cancelled a scheduled VIP meet-and-greet event in Brisbane after drummer Jess Margera discovered the high price tag attached to the experience.
Shock Over $200 Fee
Jess Margera, 47, took to social media platform X on the eve of CKY's final Australian show in Brisbane to express his astonishment. He revealed he was unaware that fans were being asked to pay $200 for an up-close and personal encounter with the band, which included a photo opportunity with himself, singer Chad I Ginsberg, and bassist Mike Leon.
'Australia, I love you guys but I will never understand paying $200 to take a picture with my dumb a**,' Jess wrote candidly in his post.
Immediate Cancellation and Refunds
Following his discovery, Jess announced that the band had decided to scrap the planned meet-and-greet entirely. 'We cancelled tonight's meet and greet and refunded everyone's 200 bucks. Come say hello to us for free, we will be hanging out,' he stated.
He encouraged fans to spend their money on enjoying the concert and merchandise instead, adding, 'Your money should go to rocking TF out, and buy some merch if you like. I don't need an ego trip. I don't give a f*** about that bulls***.'
Fan Praise and Support
The drummer's straightforward approach was met with widespread approval on social media. One fan on Reddit commented, 'Don't know this person but I'll make damn sure to familiarise myself now. We need more artists like this!'
Another echoed the sentiment, saying, 'Don't know him but props. If only celebrities at cons can do this because $500 for quick photo or $200 for a signature is crazy.'
On Instagram, fans praised the band's decision, with one writing, 'The Brisbane gig was amazing! What a perfect night. Thanks for hanging out afterwards and please do come back soon.'
Alternative Invitation
Jess Margera offered a more personal alternative to the costly meet-and-greet. 'I'm flattered and everything, but I didn't know about this meet and greet thing and I just found out what the price is and that's crazy,' he explained.
He then invited fans to interact without the hefty fee, suggesting, 'Just buy me a beer and I'll take a pic NP.'
Tour Context and Background
This Australian tour marked CKY's first visit to the country in 14 years. The band's original plans for a Down Under trip with fellow rockers Alien Ant Farm were previously cancelled due to an alleged altercation between frontmen.
Reports indicated that CKY's Chad I Ginsberg allegedly punched Alien Ant Farm's Dryden Mitchell during a UK show, leading to CKY being replaced by Drowning Pool for the Australian leg. Ginsberg addressed the incident at the time, stating on Instagram, 'Nothing wrong with defending yourself from a bad guy. If you are attacked or feel threatened, have no fear and stop the threat however you can.'
Jess Margera, who is the older brother of Jackass star Bam Margera, has often been in the public eye, but this recent action highlights his down-to-earth attitude towards fan interactions.
