Asha Bhosle, Legendary Bollywood Singer with 12,000 Songs, Dies at 92

Asha Bhosle, one of India's most celebrated playback singers, has died at the age of 92. Her extraordinary career spanned over eight decades, during which she recorded approximately 12,000 songs, making her a towering figure in Bollywood and global music.

A Voice That Defined Bollywood

Bhosle first rose to fame as a playback singer, recording tracks that actors lip-synced in Bollywood films. Though not on screen, her voice became more renowned than many of the stars who mimed her songs. She also released numerous recordings under her own name, gaining international recognition through tributes like Cornershop's 1997 hit Brimful of Asha and collaborations with artists such as Boy George, Kronos Quartet, and Gorillaz.

In 2002, she performed at London's Royal Albert Hall, described by the MC as "a living legend with over a billion fans." Her set included classics like Dum Maro Dum from the 1971 film Hare Rama Hare Krishna, showcasing her versatility from ghazals to energetic dance tunes.

Early Life and Musical Family

Born Ashalata in Goar, Sangli State (now Maharashtra), in 1933, she grew up in a musical household. Her father, Pandit Mangeshkar, was a singer and actor-manager, and her elder sister, Lata Mangeshkar, became another iconic playback singer. After their father's death when Asha was nine, the family moved to Bombay (now Mumbai), where Lata began working in film.

Despite stories of rivalry, the sisters sang together multiple times, with Asha emphasizing their bond. She recorded her first song at age 10 in 1943 and later supported her family through her singing.

Personal and Professional Milestones

At 16, she married Ganpatrao Bhosle, a secretary for Lata, against her family's wishes. The marriage ended in 1960, but she credited it with giving her three children. In the mid-1950s, she met composer RD Burman, and they married in 1980, forming a powerful creative partnership until his death in 1994. Burman helped expand her vocal range, blending funk, jazz, and rock into Hindi film music.

Her collaborations extended globally, including recordings with Boy George in 1991, Michael Stipe in 2002, and Kronos Quartet in 2005. Most recently, she worked with Gorillaz on their 2026 album The Mountain. Beyond music, she launched the Asha's restaurant chain in Dubai in 2002 and collaborated with cricketer Brett Lee on a song in 2007.

Legacy and Final Years

Bhosle performed at London's Wembley Arena multiple times, with her last live show in Dubai in 2024. She made her acting debut in the 2013 film Mai. Her daughter Varsha died in 2012, and her eldest son Hemant died in 2015; she is survived by her son Anand, who managed her career.

Asha Bhosle's legacy as a singer, actor, and businesswoman endures, marked by her immense contribution to Indian culture and music worldwide.
