Art Attack's Neil Buchanan marks 70 with heavy rock band revival
Art Attack star Neil Buchanan turns 70 as rocker

Neil Buchanan is celebrating his 70th birthday as the frontman of a reformed heavy rock band, having left his Art Attack days behind. The TV legend, who presented the children's art programme from 1990 to 2007, has embraced a very different lifestyle, trading his famous red jumper for long hair and rugged stubble.

From Art Attack to heavy metal

Art Attack was staple viewing for generations of young people and inspired viewers young and old to get creative. After leaving the programme, Buchanan kept painting but was determined to pursue other passions, reforming Merseyside rockers Marseilles. The band has released four albums and six singles, and has supported acts including Judas Priest, Nazareth, Whitesnake and UFO on tour.

Buchanan became a household name when he started presenting Art Attack, which aired from 1990 to 2007. ITV announced its cancellation in July 2007, but reruns continued until 30 May 2011. He later presented shows such as Finders Keepers, Animal Crazy, and It's a Mystery.

Banksy conspiracy theory denied

After reforming the band, Buchanan found himself the subject of a conspiracy theory, with people believing he was the secretive artist Banksy. The rumour started after a social media user noticed the street artist's work appearing in locations where Buchanan had performed. The theory gained traction due to his artistic flair, passion for music, and knack for creating large-scale art installations in public spaces.

He was forced to deny the claim, releasing a statement on the band's website saying: "We have been inundated with enquiries regarding the current social media story. Unfortunately, this website does not have the infrastructure to answer all these enquiries individually. However, we can confirm that there is no truth in the rumour whatsoever."

Still active in art

Buchanan remains active in the art world and has his own website showcasing his art collections and photography. Earlier this year, he wore the red jumper again for a campaign, leaving fans in awe of his youthful appearance.

He said: "It's been nearly two decades since I last took on a project like this, but when I heard the Müller Corner Originals Rhubarb Crumble-inspired yoghurt was coming back, I had to get involved." One fan remarked: "He looks the same he always seemed such a top guy." Another said: "Get a new series. Back on. I promise wherever I am, I will run my fastest to make it back home on time. The memories x."
