Samson, a GTA 6 Alternative, Faces Mixed Reviews Ahead of Console Launch

Samson, an open-world game often compared to Grand Theft Auto, is set to arrive on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in Fall 2026. Developed by Liquid Swords, a studio founded by former Just Cause and Mad Max creators, the game launched on PC in April 2025 to mixed reception.

Set in the fictional city of Tyndalston, players control a mobster working to pay off debts through various jobs. The game's gritty 1990s New York aesthetic and open-world design have drawn comparisons to the highly anticipated GTA 6, leading some players to use it as a placeholder until November 2025.

On Steam, Samson currently holds a 'Mixed' rating, with criticism focused on repetitive quests and technical bugs. Developer Liquid Swords acknowledged the issues in a statement, saying, 'Early impressions are mixed and many of you are experiencing game-breaking bugs and performance issues. That’s unacceptable.' The team has since released several performance updates and plans further improvements before the console launch.

Despite the criticism, some players have praised the game's map design and atmosphere. One Steam reviewer noted, 'The map design is actually solid. It’s got that gritty, 1990s New York vibe and the environment looks great.' Another added, 'This is a pretty decent game, people just like to complain a lot.'

Future patches aim to enhance combat, add new vehicle variants, and fix bugs, according to IGN. The console release window places Samson in direct competition with GTA 6, a bold move for the smaller-budget title. Liquid Swords has not announced a specific release date for the console version.
