Rockstar Games has announced that Grand Theft Auto 6 will launch on November 19, 2026, with standard and ultimate editions priced at $79.99 and $99.99 respectively. However, the gaming community has reacted with anger and disappointment after learning that physical copies of the game will not include a Blu-ray disc, but merely a download code inside the box.
Fan Backlash Over Missing Disc
The decision to omit a physical disc has been met with strong criticism from fans who value the ability to share games or resell them. One user wrote on X: 'I am devastated. GTA 6 physical copy won’t have a disc, but just a code to download the game. Waited years for this [heartbreak emoji] wtf @rockstargames.' Another added: 'Rockstar has gone full anti-consumer with GTA 6. Charging $79.99 for a game that ships as nothing more than a fancy empty box with a download code. At this point it’s straight up disrespectful. They’re jacking the price up from the already inflated $70 standard, yet delivering way less than what ‘physical’ used to mean.'
On Reddit, threads discussing the no-disc announcement have proliferated. In the GTA subreddit, one commenter stated: 'If I’m forced into digital, I might as well just wait for the PC version.' The move is widely speculated to be an anti-leak measure, as Rockstar has suffered from leaks in the past. By providing only digital codes, the company can block access until the official release date, preventing retail copies from appearing early.
Ultimate Edition Content Sparks Controversy
Beyond the disc issue, the Ultimate Edition's inclusion of in-game extras has also drawn ire. The bundle includes mission content in the 'Ptt Youngin$ Illegal Goods Store raid' and locks features such as a Hair Salon, Tattoo Shop, Clothing Store, and Mod Shop behind the paywall. A user on X commented: 'A Hair Salon, Tattoo Shop, Clothing Store, and Mod Shop locked behind the GTA 6 Ultimate Edition? Rockstar, please.' A Reddit post on the GTA6unmoderated subreddit titled 'The most egregious ultimate edition in history' read: 'I can’t quite believe how much content is being locked behind this ultimate edition, never seen anything like it.' While it is expected that other customization options will be available in the standard version, the blocked stores may appear boarded up or inaccessible to standard edition buyers.
No Online Multiplayer at Launch
Rockstar has confirmed that GTA 6 will be a 'single-player experience' at launch, meaning the online component will not be available on November 19, 2026. This mirrors the release pattern of GTA 5, which launched on September 17, 2013, while GTA Online arrived on October 1, 2013. However, the exact release date for GTA 6's online mode remains unannounced. Pre-ordering GTA 6 includes a free month of GTA+, a subscription service that provides monthly in-game cash for GTA Online, suggesting Rockstar is currently prioritizing the existing GTA Online over the next iteration. The future of GTA Online for GTA 6—whether it will be a free addition or a paid standalone download—remains uncertain, though given the revenue generated by the current version, a paid model is plausible.
PS5 Features and Enhancements
According to the PlayStation blog, GTA 6 will 'play best' on PlayStation 5, with support for the DualSense controller's haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and built-in speaker (optional). The game will also utilize the Tempest 3D Audiotech and the console's SSD for near-instant load times. Additionally, the PlayStation Store listing confirms the game is PS5 Pro Enhanced, though specific improvements for the PS5 Pro—such as targeting 4K resolution at a stable 60fps—have not been detailed.
