Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered revives the 2002 GameCube arena brawler with cleaned-up 4K visuals, a revised unlock system, and new online multiplayer, delivering a mostly great tribute to the original that earns a 3/5 rating.
Published by Atari, the remaster keeps the core of the original while modernizing it. The most immediate change is the visual upgrade: battles are now presented in full 4K clarity, with the fog and haze that once plagued the eight locations removed. The character and arena designs remain faithful to the source, preserving the B-movie charm of the original.
Gameplay and Roster
The game features 12 playable monsters from Toho's Godzilla universe, each with unique moves. Gigan can teleport, King Ghidorah uses gravity beams, and Godzilla's Atomic Breath can be fired as single shots or a constant laser. The standard light, heavy, and grab attacks carry a good sense of weight, reinforcing the epic scale of the battles.
During fights, UFOs can drop performance-enhancing orbs that temporarily buff health, replenish the super meter, or activate Rage Mode for a more devastating maneuver. These are easier to collect in 3-v-1 or 2-v-2 bouts than in one-on-one fights.
Modes and Unlocks
The single-player Adventure mode follows an alien race, the Vortaak, invading Earth to control select monsters, leading the player to fight across the globe and on the alien mothership. On standard difficulty, runs take no more than 30 minutes and are mainly worth repeating to level up preferred roster members.
Other modes include Destruction, which tasks players with causing maximum damage in a city, and Survival, which pits players against waves of enemies with a single health bar. New to the remaster is online multiplayer, allowing up to four players to battle from the roster of 12 monsters, alongside local multiplayer.
The revised unlock system lets players select a research goal and build toward it by playing various modes. Unlocking the most devastating characters and locations can become a grind, but focusing efforts on a single goal is a workaround that suits modern players.
Gallery art and behind-the-scenes content are available to unlock, though not to the extent of Digital Eclipse's Gold Master Collection releases. The Game Boy Advance version of the game is not included in this package.
Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered launches on PS5, Xbox, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2 on Tuesday, November 2.
