Sports Interactive has confirmed that Football Manager 26 (FM26) will receive no further updates, effectively abandoning the game after a troubled eight-month lifecycle. The studio admitted that the title 'falls short' of its goals and expectations, marking a low point for the franchise.
Final Update and Confirmation
The last update, Patch 26.3.2, was released on June 9, 2026, and included final confirmed squads for the 2026 World Cup and a quick-start feature for new saves. Reddit users had predicted this would be the final patch, and their speculation proved correct. Sports Interactive thanked players for their support but confirmed no further fixes would be issued, though bugs can still be reported for internal tracking.
A spokesperson stated: 'Your support has been invaluable in helping us shape and prioritise updates, including the return of select features, as well as delivering many bug fixes and stability improvements. Following that International Management update across all platforms, we can confirm that FM26 Update 26.3.2 was the last for FM26.'
Player Numbers and Studio Commitment
Despite the difficulties, more than 8 million players have played FM26, making it the second-most played game in Football Manager history. However, the studio acknowledged this falls short of its targets. 'It falls short of the goals and expectations we set for this new era of the franchise,' the spokesperson added. 'As Studio Director Miles Jacobson outlined in May, the feedback we’ve received has given us a clear direction and a focused set of priorities for our next release.'
To rebuild trust, a new Senior Community Manager has been appointed to improve dialogue between the community and the studio. Information about Football Manager 27 will be shared in the coming months.
What Went Wrong with FM26?
FM26's troubled cycle stemmed from the cancellation of Football Manager 25 in February 2025 after months of delays. Jacobson called that decision 'embarrassing' and 'the most expensive decision' the studio had ever made. FM26 launched in November 2025 on a new Unity engine, but players quickly encountered an unresponsive UI, numerous bugs, and navigation issues. Many criticised the UI for prioritising casual and console gamers over PC and Mac users, leading to thousands of refund requests on Steam.
Regular patches addressed some issues, including the reintroduction of pass maps and touchline shouts, but player counts suffered. A May 2026 update that brought back international management for the 2026 World Cup provided a temporary boost, but the damage had already been done. Sports Interactive now faces the challenge of rebuilding trust ahead of Football Manager 27.
