Claudia Winkleman Quits Chatshow After Seven Episodes, Cites Nerves
Claudia Winkleman Quits Chatshow After Seven Episodes

Claudia Winkleman has stepped down from her self-titled BBC chatshow after only one series, comprising seven episodes, admitting she was "too nervous to enjoy" the conversations with celebrity guests.

Winkleman's Decision to Quit

The presenter, who also hosts the hit reality series The Traitors and formerly co-presented Strictly Come Dancing, announced her departure in a statement. "I'm incredibly grateful to the BBC for giving me the opportunity, to the guests who agreed to come and chat to me, and the production team who were simply excellent," she said. "Sometimes you have to try something to see how it fits, and I realised I was just too nervous to enjoy it. Maybe one day I will give it another try, but for now I already have the best jobs in the world and absolutely love the shows I'm doing."

Show's Launch and Reception

The Claudia Winkleman Show launched in March 2024 and attracted an average combined audience of between 1.5 million and 2 million viewers per episode, according to the BBC. While these figures are respectable, they fall short of the 2 million-plus viewers that Graham Norton's chatshow commands. The series divided critics; Guardian columnist Lucy Mangan described the opening episode as "an unholy mess" while praising Winkleman herself.

Industry Context

Winkleman's exit underscores the challenges of the chatshow format, which has proven difficult for many hosts. Davina McCall previously expressed regret over her own chatshow, which struggled in a prime slot in 2006. The rise of digital formats, such as long-form podcasts and YouTube series like Chicken Shop Date, has increased competition for traditional TV talk shows.

Ed Havard, the BBC's director of entertainment, said: "Claudia's warmth and quick wit made The Claudia Winkleman Show an absolute joy. Whilst we loved the show, we fully respect her decision... As the host of the country's most-watched show, Claudia will be back on the BBC very soon when The Celebrity Traitors returns later this year."

Winkleman's Career

Winkleman's profile soared after the success of The Traitors and its celebrity spin-off. She had occasionally filled in for Graham Norton before being given her own show. Despite her popularity, the chatshow format proved stressful; she had previously experienced the pressure of live interviews early in her career when an S Club 7 publicist halted an interview on Liquid News.
