BBC thriller set in Glasgow hailed 'suspenseful' by viewers

A BBC thriller set in Glasgow has been praised by viewers for its gripping storyline, strong performances and unexpected twists, with many fans discovering it for the first time four years after it first aired.

The three-part series follows an emergency call handler whose ordinary shift takes a disturbing turn when he receives a desperate call from a woman who claims to have killed someone. Things become even more complicated when the caller appears to recognise his voice, leaving him scrambling to work out who she is and how she knows him. As he attempts to uncover the truth, he is forced to confront his past, with his decisions threatening to have devastating consequences.

Familiar Scottish faces

The drama features a number of familiar Scottish actors, including Celebrity Traitors star Sharon Rooney, Game of Thrones actor Daniel Portman and Joanna Vanderham, known for her role in The Runaway.

The Control Room first aired on BBC One in July 2022 and stars Iain De Caestecker as Gabe, an emergency handler working for the Strathclyde Ambulance Service in Glasgow. Produced by the team behind Sherlock, the thriller uses flashbacks to gradually reveal more about Gabe's childhood and the events that have shaped his life.

Viewer reactions

Despite being released several years ago, the series has continued to attract attention from viewers, with fans taking to IMDb to share their thoughts on the gripping BBC drama.

Taking to the review site, one viewer hailed the series as "suspenseful" revealing they watched it in one sitting. They wrote: "This is a great short suspenseful thriller from start to finish. Love binge watching these types of short series. They are just the exact length- not too drawn out but long and interesting enough to keep you watching. Great actors - especially love the actor that played Gabo. Has an interesting story line- thats well done using flashbacks."

Another viewer praised the acting, writing: "Iain De Caestecker was the standout for me. His portrayal of Gabe a nervy anxious character who was caught up in something not of his making held my attention throughout."

While a third expressed: "There are good plot twists, good actings (Iain de Caestecker did an amazing job). I think the flashbacks are an amazing way to understand the series as the story progress. The main character goes through a lot as he returns in his childhood memories, that explains his choices."

Meanwhile another viewer believed the series had some gaps in the plot. Despite this, they gave it 8 out of 10 stars stating: "It was well-written and acted, and very watchable. Glaring gaps in the plot but so what; it's entertainment?"

The Control Room is available to stream for free on BBC iPlayer.
