Bill Nighy's 2020 period drama Emma is currently free to stream on BBC iPlayer, but only until 8th November. The adaptation of Jane Austen's novel holds an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics calling it "visually stunning" and "a delight".
Cast and Plot
The film stars Anya Taylor-Joy as Emma Woodhouse, a wealthy young woman who meddles in the romantic lives of her friends. Bill Nighy plays her father, Mr Woodhouse, and Mia Goth appears as Emma's close friend Harriet. When Emma tries to arrange a romance for Harriet, she faces unexpected feelings of her own.
Director and Reception
Directed by Autumn de Wilde, the film is praised for its vibrant costumes, lavish sets, and fresh take on the 1818 novel. One reviewer described it as a "phenomenal adaptation", adding: "Hilarious, beautifully filmed, witty, and well-acted. Rewards multiple viewings." Another compared it to "Wes Anderson meets Jane Austen in the best way".
Mixed Criticism
Not all reviews are positive. Some critics have objected to the film's bubblegum pink aesthetic, calling it "eye-irritating". One viewer wrote: "So horrible! I got so uneasy after five minutes watching, and stayed for an amazing 15 more minutes." Another said it is "a too-looong, pinky strawberry flavoured movie".
Emma is streaming now on BBC iPlayer.
