Motorists aged 70 and over who fail to renew their driving licence correctly could face a fine of up to £1,000, three to six penalty points, and invalidated car insurance, the DVLA has warned.
Drivers born before 1956 must renew their licence upon turning 70, declaring any health or medical conditions that could affect their ability to drive. Unlike younger drivers, who renew every decade, those over 70 must update their photocard every three years.
Free renewal and official portal
Licence renewal is free of charge for those over 70, who are allowed to continue driving while their application is processed. The DVLA cautioned motorists to be wary of third-party websites, noting that the Government website is the only official DVLA service portal, with other sites potentially charging fees for services that should be free.
In a post on social media platform X, the DVLA stated: "You need to renew your licence when you turn 70. Do it online now – it's easy, quick and secure."
Health conditions and entitlements
Those over 70 may also forfeit certain licence entitlements, including the C1 and D1 categories for operating larger vehicles and minibuses.
Julie Lennard, DVLA Chief Executive, previously stated: "GOV.UK is the only site where customers will find our official services, many of which are free. You may be charged a premium when using other websites offering services that are not connected to DVLA."
Conditions for driving during renewal
Guidance from Age UK also emphasised that no fee applies to renewing a licence after 70, irrespective of the application method selected. Nevertheless, it cautioned: "Make sure you go through the official DVLA website if you're renewing online, as some unofficial websites will try to charge you to renew your licence."
Motorists aged over 70 can continue to drive while their renewal is being processed, provided they meet seven key requirements:
- You're not currently disqualified
- You weren't disqualified as a high risk offender on or after 1 June 2013
- You have the support of your doctor to continue driving
- You had a valid licence
- You only drive under the conditions of the previous licence
- Your application is less than a year old
- Your last licence wasn't revoked or refused for medical reasons
