Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced is an incredibly faithful remake that solidifies Edward Kenway's journey as one of the best Assassin's Creed entries. Over a decade after its original release, the remake proves that a pirate's life is what players crave.
Visual and Gameplay Enhancements
The remake takes full advantage of Ubisoft's latest Anvil engine, making the Caribbean more beautiful than ever. The sea shines under the sun, Kenway's coat sways in the wind, and facial animations have seen a significant leap in fidelity. Combat has been completely revised, offering more options and brutal finishers. The control system has been updated, with running now tied to the left analogue stick and parkour benefiting from the fluid climbing system introduced in Assassin's Creed Shadows.
Combat and Ship Combat
Combat now emphasizes active skills such as rope pull and leg sweep, adding dynamism to encounters. Beating down an enemy's defense meter leaves them open for a final takedown finisher. Ship combat remains largely unchanged, as Ubisoft nailed it the first time. Battling frigates, forts, and man-of-war ships is still tactical and thrilling, with the Jackdaw offering various shot types including side cannons, front guns, and long-range mortar.
New Content and Story
Resynced adds three new naval officers who can be recruited onto the Jackdaw for unique upgrades. A string of endgame missions centered on Blackbeard further explores his relationship with Kenway, serving as a welcome coda to the Black Flag saga. The story and character work have been finessed with nips and tucks, but Matt Ryan's performance as Edward Kenway remains endearing.
Overall Impression
Despite initial hesitation about the need for a remake, Resynced quickly won over critics. It justifies its existence beyond the visual upgrade, enhancing the original material rather than throwing out the blueprint. The revised combat system is more involved and rewarding, while the new narrative content ties up loose ends. Resynced is in love with the original game, and that love is on display in almost every aspect. It is now the best way to play Assassin's Creed Black Flag, further enhancing what was already the definitive single-player pirate game. Rating: 5/5. Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced is scheduled to launch on PS5, Xbox, and PC on Thursday, July 9.
