The upcoming Winter Words Festival at Pitlochry Festival Theatre has unveiled a stellar line-up, headlined by former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and celebrated crime writers Ian Rankin and Val McDermid. The literary festival in Scotland promises an eclectic mix of politics, fiction, and culture over four days in February.
A Star-Studded Literary Line-Up
Scheduled to run from 12 to 15 February next year, the event is curated by the theatre's artistic director, comedian Alan Cumming. He described the programme as "beyond eclectic," highlighting its exploration of contemporary and historical themes. One of the key events will feature Nicola Sturgeon in conversation with her friend, author Val McDermid, discussing Sturgeon's memoir, Frankly.
Meanwhile, Rebus creator Ian Rankin will share the stage with Cumming himself. The festival also welcomes veteran BBC broadcaster Sally Magnusson, who will talk about her new novel, The Shapeshifter’s Daughter, with journalist Magnus Linklater.
Diverse Talks and Creative Workshops
The festival's scope extends far beyond headline names. Celebrated writer Amy Liptrot, author of the bestselling memoir The Outrun, will attend. The book, which recounts her return to Orkney after a period in London, was adapted into a successful art-house film in 2024.
In a poignant session, Dr Jim Swire will discuss his book, Lockerbie: A Father’s Search For Justice, with journalist Stephen Jardine. Dr Swire lost his daughter in the 1988 Pan Am bombing. Football will also have its place, with Paul Goodwin, co-founder of the Scottish Football Supporters Association, talking fan ownership and the future of the game.
The programme is richly varied, featuring:
- Literary lunches with chefs Pam Brunton and Tom Lewis.
- Talks on politics, the environment, mountaineering, and art.
- Play readings, poetry, and a crafting workshop.
- A dance party with Alan Cumming on DJ duties.
"We feature literary titans like Oscar Wilde and Walt Whitman, and Scottish masters like Alasdair Gray," said Cumming. "There is truly something for everyone, and it’s all happening here."
