Roy Keane Calls John McGinn 'Pub Player' Then Praises Him

Roy Keane has branded John McGinn a 'pub player' on his bad days, but insists he would have the Scotland star in his squad every day of the week.

Keane's Criticism and Praise

The former Manchester United captain took aim at the Aston Villa skipper before eventually making an admission over the ex-Hibs ace. Speaking on the Overlap podcast, Keane said: 'He's one of these fellas, when he's bad, when he has his bad days, he does look like a pub player. When he's off it, he looks shocking.'

However, fellow pundit Ian Wright leapt to McGinn's defence, insisting the midfielder rarely has a poor game. This prompted some praise from Keane, who added: 'If you watch him long enough and what the stats are, when he's in the team week in, week out, if these managers all like him... You'd have him in your group, absolutely and it's no surprise Villa are doing well. He's at the forefront of that.'

McGinn's Rise to Prominence

Aston Villa captain John McGinn is a mainstay under Unai Emery and helped fire Villa to Europa League glory and Champions League qualification last season. Steve Bruce signed him from Hibernian for just £2.75 million when the Birmingham club were in the Championship nearly eight years ago. Since then, he has gone from strength to strength, scoring the winning goal in the 2019 playoff final at Wembley.

McGinn also became a talisman for Scotland during their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign and has since helped his country reach Euro 2024 and this summer's World Cup Finals in North America.

Keane admitted he took a call from Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes after taking aim at the Portuguese star on the same podcast a few weeks ago.
