Northumberland Street will be closed to traffic on Sunday, November 1, ahead of the unveiling of Fenwick's Christmas Window for 2026, with the countdown set to begin at 6.30pm.
The annual reveal, a tradition that has become part of Geordie folklore, has drawn generations of North East families for decades. Past themes have included Camberwick Green and Pinocchio in the 1970s, the controversial Aliens window of the early 2000s, and more recent displays such as Beatrix Potter, The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe and Shaun the Sheep. Last year's A Christmas Carol was widely praised as one of the best in recent years.
Road closure details and restrictions
To allow the reveal to take place safely, a fence system will be installed on Northumberland Street overnight on Saturday, October 31, as the stage is built. The gates will remain open to allow normal Sunday trading to continue until 5pm, when the road will be shut to all retailers.
The road closure will remain in place until 9pm, with staff exiting businesses on Northumberland Street being escorted out of the cordon. Invited guests will gather in front of the window for the reveal, while others can watch via the Fenwick YouTube channel.
Public viewing after the reveal
Fenwick's Window will be open for the general public to view on Monday, November 2. The boards went up in front of the window earlier this month, signalling that something exciting was happening behind them.
