Newcastle Mela 2026 opened at Exhibition Park on Sunday, beginning its two-day run as a 'vibrant celebration of South Asian culture'. The free, family-friendly event, which draws more than 40,000 visitors each year, continued despite the wet weather.
Two days of culture and entertainment
The festival, which has been a regular feature of Newcastle's calendar since it first arrived in 1993, showcases the rich heritage of different South Asian cultures. Attendees can enjoy 'mouth-watering' food and 'captivating' music and entertainment.
On Saturday, a preview showcase took place at Grey's Monument, featuring live performances and cultural activities. Circus performer Kwabana Lindsay, musicians Dhol & Pipes and street comedian Daft as a Brush all performed in the city centre.
Community at the heart of the Mela
Taj Mohammed, Chairperson of Newcastle Asian Art and Music, said: "Newcastle Mela has become such an important part of the city’s cultural calendar and it’s amazing to see how it continues to grow."
"It’s all about community and everyone is welcome. From delicious food stalls to music, dance and family fun, there really is something for everyone."
