The vibrant Africa Foto Fair 2025 is currently captivating audiences in Abidjan and Grand-Bassam, Ivory Coast, presenting a powerful collection of photographic works from across the globe. This significant event continues the legacy of the Addis Foto Fest, established in 2010 by photographer Aida Muluneh in Ethiopia's capital.
From Local Festival to Global Platform
Originally created to showcase photographic talent from Africa and its diaspora, the Addis Foto Fest has experienced remarkable growth, particularly since the pandemic. The event successfully expanded its reach through a dynamic online presence, embracing a borderless approach to exhibiting photography. This digital transformation has allowed the festival to include an even wider array of artistic perspectives and connect with international audiences.
Spotlight on Featured Photographers
The 2025 edition presents a diverse roster of visual storytellers, each bringing unique cultural insights and technical mastery. From Madagascar, Henitsoa Rafalia captures the intensity of street trial rider Dada Monistèra, while Ericke Tjiueza from Namibia explores complex themes of African identity, gender, and spirituality.
Ivorian artist Konkobo Jean Luc, also known as Perfect Black, examines cultural identity through his work, navigating his dual Burkinabè and Ivorian heritage. Algerian photographer Ferhat Bouda, based in Frankfurt, focuses on capturing authentic human experiences beyond stereotypes, whether in conflict zones or daily life.
The festival also features international contributors including Christian Sinibaldi, an award-winning Italian photographer who regularly works with the Guardian, and Carolina Arantes, a Brazilian artist investigating how colonial history continues to shape modern democracies.
Documenting Diverse Narratives
Several photographers at the fair use their craft to highlight important social and environmental issues. Ebrahim Alipoor, a Kurdish Iranian photographer, documents the perilous journeys of kolbars – border carriers who risk their lives transporting heavy loads. Iranian visual storyteller Kianoush Saadati focuses on the relationship between environmental degradation and human resilience, exemplified by his poignant image of a woman caring for an injured owl.
Nigerian photographer Sogo Oladele aims to balance his portrayal of Africa's beauty with honest depictions of areas needing improvement. Chinese visual artist Wang Xue Sophia incorporates portraiture, rhythm, and dance into her research-based storytelling practice.
The Africa Foto Fair 2025 continues its programme in Ivory Coast until 7 December 2025, offering visitors an unparalleled opportunity to experience the rich diversity of contemporary photography from Africa and beyond.
