Stella McCartney's Paris Fashion Week Spectacle Blends Equine Therapy and Career Milestones
British fashion designer Stella McCartney transformed her Paris Fashion Week show into a vibrant celebration of her 25-year career, marked by a surprising equine display and a prestigious French honour. The event opened with a dozen dancing horses, a nod to the Chinese Year of the Horse, which McCartney described as a form of "equine therapy" to set a whimsical tone.
Speaking after the show, McCartney revealed she is set to receive the Légion d'honneur, France's highest civilian award, on Thursday. She also showcased innovative knitwear made from yeast, highlighting her commitment to sustainability despite her brand not turning a profit since 2017.
A Personal Journey Through Fashion
The collection served as a nostalgic tour of McCartney's life, featuring fishermen knits inspired by childhood memories on the Mull of Kintyre, loose low-rise denim from her teenage years in west London, and jewel-coloured stirrup leggings recalling her internship at Christian Lacroix. The finale included a vest emblazoned with "My dad's a rock star," worn in front of her father, Paul McCartney, who sat in the front row alongside Oprah Winfrey.
McCartney emphasised her unique position as one of the few women designing for women and her brand's longstanding avoidance of leather, feathers, fur, or animal skins. While sustainability is a common theme in fashion, she stands out for pioneering brewed protein knitwear.
Pieter Mulier's Transition from Alaïa to Versace
In another significant industry moment, Pieter Mulier took his final bow at Alaïa on Wednesday night, ahead of his highly anticipated move to replace Donatella at Versace. The softly spoken Belgian designer, who had never run a fashion house before joining Alaïa in 2021, described the show as emotional for his team, noting that news of his departure had circulated early.
Versace, recently acquired by the Prada group, is betting on Mulier's sculptural, anti-trend approach, a stark contrast to his predecessor Dario Vitale's brief tenure. Mulier's accessories, such as perforated ballet flats that became a high-street sensation, have already gained mainstream popularity, with his new collection featuring stilettos using similar techniques.
Alaïa's Enduring Legacy
Alaïa, though not the largest or most well-known fashion house, holds a beloved status in the industry. Mulier's final collection paid homage to the late Azzedine Alaïa, known as the "king of cling," with stretch knit dresses moulded to the body, pliable knit skirts and tops, and haute hooded dresses reminiscent of Grace Jones in A View to a Kill.
The brand's cultural impact was highlighted by appearances from Michella Obama and Rihanna, who revealed her pregnancy in a cherry red Alaïa jumpsuit. Alicia Silverstone, whose character Cher in Clueless famously declared an Alaïa dress as "totally important," attended the show, underscoring the label's iconic status.
As the fashion world watches Mulier's next steps and McCartney continues to innovate, these events underscore the dynamic and often personal nature of the industry, blending tradition with forward-thinking creativity.
