Senegal Sack Pape Thiaw After World Cup Exit, Vieira Linked

Senegal have dismissed head coach Pape Thiaw after their devastating round-of-32 exit at the 2026 World Cup. The African side squandered a two-goal lead in the dying moments of regulation time against Belgium, eventually losing in extra time following a controversial penalty awarded in the 120+5th minute.

Thiaw's Tenure and World Cup Campaign

Thiaw had led Senegal to the Africa Cup of Nations final earlier this year, but the World Cup campaign fell short of expectations. Drawn in a tough group alongside France, Norway, and Iraq, Senegal lost to France and Norway before thrashing Iraq in their final group match. That victory secured a round-of-32 spot as one of the best third-placed teams.

Against Belgium, Senegal appeared poised for an upset, leading 2-0 with minutes remaining. However, a late collapse forced extra time, and a soft penalty awarded to Belgium in the fifth minute of added time proved decisive. Belgium progressed to the last-16, while Senegal were eliminated.

Federation Statement and Vieira Links

The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) issued a statement confirming Thiaw's dismissal: “After a thorough evaluation of the sporting results and prospects of the national team, the Executive Committee deemed it necessary to initiate this procedure in the best interests of Senegalese football.” The FSF added that a press conference would be held on Friday to explain the reasons behind the decision.

According to French outlet L'Equipe, former France international Patrick Vieira is being considered as a potential successor. Vieira was born in Dakar, Senegal, before moving to France at age eight. He has managerial experience with Crystal Palace, Genoa, and New York City FC, and has been out of work since 2025. He has been working as a pundit during the 2026 World Cup.

Dressing Room Issues and Future Prospects

One of the first challenges for any new manager will be to address a potentially fractured dressing room. Reports emerged of behind-the-scenes issues under Thiaw, including suggestions that he had not been paid by the federation since February after failing to receive a new contract.

Senegal's next major tournament is the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. Thereafter, attention will shift to qualifying for the 2030 World Cup, which will be primarily hosted by Morocco, Spain, and Portugal, with Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay each hosting one match.
