Cilla Black's Iconic 60s Fashion Collection Heads to Auction
Cilla Black's Vintage Fashion Auction for Charity

For Generation Z, names like Molly-Mae and Kate Moss typically define British fashion icons. Cilla Black, the legendary singer and television host beloved by our parents' generation, rarely features on our style radars. Yet when presented with the opportunity to explore her legendary wardrobe, this 25-year-old journalist discovered timeless treasures that transcend generations.

A Surprising Fashion Revelation

Having launched her music career in 1963 before becoming a prime-time television host, Cilla Black cultivated a distinctive style throughout the 1960s and beyond. Her wardrobe featured bold patterns, vibrant skirt suits, and extravagant ballgowns that initially seemed far removed from contemporary fashion preferences. However, closer inspection revealed hidden gems that wouldn't look out of place in today's Zara or H&M collections.

More than 240 of Cilla's personal pieces will go under the hammer on November 28 in an auction organised by Nesbits Auctions Ltd. The sale celebrates the life and legacy of the entertainer who defined British entertainment for over five decades while raising money for Variety, a children's charity close to her heart.

Iconic Pieces With Royal Connections

The collection's standout piece is undoubtedly the bespoke velvet ballgown Cilla wore to the Royal Variety Performance in 1969. The star performed a medley of songs before Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip, and Princess Anne at this historic event - the first Royal Variety show broadcast on British television in colour.

Featuring striking turquoise fabric, structured shoulders, and dramatic feather sleeves embellished with silver sequins, this Jean Varon and John Bates design commands attention. With an auction estimate of £350-£550, it represents the collection's most expensive item, though trying it on instantly evokes the glamour of the Swinging Sixties.

Another remarkable piece is a 1960s/70s white sleeveless dress trimmed with elaborate pink ostrich feathers, estimated at £200-£300. Surprisingly comfortable and undeniably dramatic, Cilla wore a similar outfit while performing 'You've Lost That Loving Feeling' on her television show in 1968. This vintage design could easily stun as an unconventional wedding dress.

Affordable Vintage Glamour

For those seeking Christmas party outfits that guarantee conversation, several auction lots offer incredible value. A blue sequin chiffon dress from the 1970s, which Cilla wore in her 'Bright Eyes' music video, comes as part of an evening wear bundle starting at just £60.

Meanwhile, a yellow sequin gown worn during the 'Cilla' show broadcast in November 1971 carries an estimate of £70-£100. Though challenging to wear due to its non-stretch fabric, its timeless elegance recalls styles favoured by modern figures like Kate Middleton.

The auction includes pieces spanning Cilla's entire career, from her early days at Liverpool's Cavern Club to her reign as queen of Saturday-night television. Her family decided to donate the collection to mark the tenth anniversary of her passing in 2015 at age 72.

Laurence Guinness, Chief Executive of Variety, emphasised Cilla's commitment to their cause: 'She was a big supporter of Variety, a huge fan of our work. She recognised that disabled children from low-income families have always had a hard time.'

He added: 'Cilla loved her clothes; she loved her fashion. She had an iconic look, and they catalogued her wardrobe, which was an incredible testament to her style and fashion sense.'

Every penny from the auction will support disadvantaged and disabled children across the UK, making each purchase both a fashion investment and charitable contribution. With Christmas party season approaching, these unique vintage pieces offer glamour unavailable on the high street - and the opportunity to own a fragment of British entertainment history.
