Victoria Beckham Opens Up About Eating Disorder, Financial Struggles in Netflix Doc

Victoria Beckham has laid bare her struggles with an eating disorder and the near-collapse of her fashion business in a new Netflix docuseries. The three-part show, directed by Nadia Hallgren, follows the former Spice Girl as she prepares for her most ambitious fashion show yet, while reflecting on the highs and lows of her career.

In the series, Beckham reveals she was bullied at school and felt like an outsider. 'I just didn't fit in at all. But when you’re on stage for that moment, you’re someone else,' she says. 'And I didn’t really want to be me. I didn’t like me.' She also faced criticism about her appearance and weight, which contributed to her eating disorder.

After the Spice Girls split in 2000, Beckham struggled with the transition to life as a footballer's wife in Manchester. 'It felt quite slow, it felt really lonely,' she recalls. 'I just kept thinking, what am I gonna do?' She later moved to Spain with husband David Beckham and adopted a provocative style, which she now admits was 'attention-seeking' during a period of creative emptiness.

Beckham's fashion label faced severe financial difficulties, at one point being 'tens of millions in the red.' She rebuilt the brand from the brink of collapse. The series also touches on tensions with fellow Spice Girl Mel B, who told Beckham, 'Don’t forget where you’ve come from' – a comment that 'upset' her.
