A 24-year-old woman who moved in with a 75-year-old stranger says they have become best friends despite their 51-year age gap. Ella Wilson Sharp met David Cox while travelling through Sydney, Australia, when she was looking for a place to live.
The content creator, originally from Canterbury, Kent, had only planned to lodge with David temporarily, but the two quickly developed a close friendship. Ella now treats David's property as her home base between travels.
An Unexpected Friendship
Over the past two years, the pair have embarked on numerous adventures together, from exploring Uluru rock to trying their hand at skateboarding. Ella maintains that they bring out the best in one another, insisting their age difference is irrelevant as they share identical perspectives on life.
"At first everyone was a bit unsure of the situation, especially my parents, but I've learned to trust my gut whilst travelling," Ella explains. "Our friendship was so unexpected, but I think we bring out the best in each other. We're in hysterics every day, and we've got the same outlook on life, we're both up for anything."
She adds: "He's like my Aussie granddad, it's been amazing, we've been on so many adventures. He's my best friend; we do everything together."
How They Met
Back in September 2024, Ella was making her way along Australia's East Coast when her funds ran dry. She headed to Sydney, where she crashed on a mate's sofa while earning money working at a local café. Determined to secure proper lodgings, Ella would enquire with every customer who entered the café about potential accommodation.
"One lady came in and said she knew someone who had a spare room, but she didn't mention his age or anything," Ella explained. The following day, the woman returned with David in tow to introduce them, and the two hit it off immediately.
"I was a tiny bit apprehensive at first, but it was just super easy from the get-go," she recalled. David offered Ella his spare room for a week while she searched for alternative accommodation, but their friendship blossomed so naturally that she unexpectedly remained for half a year.
Daily Life and Adventures
Following the move, the pair started preparing meals together and established a nightly ritual of enjoying fruit and ice cream. "He had two meals that he'd do on repeat, so I spice those up for him and introduce him to new recipes," she said. "One of us cooks and the other washes up, we never have to discuss house chores or anything."
Since becoming housemates, Ella and David have embarked on several activities from speedboating to hiking, and now regularly participate in park runs together. She has recently got him into hiking, and the pair are planning to tackle some "crazy hikes" in Tasmania together in October. "I took him on an unexpected half marathon hike the other day," she said. "I wasn't sure how he'd handle it, but he loved it."
The duo are now planning to train together for a Hyrox competition next year. "He says he's reliving his youth, and I'm so glad I'm able to give him those opportunities," she said. "He's taught me to slow down and appreciate the little things in life as well; it's been great learning to see the world from his perspective."
A Home Away from Home
In March 2025, Ella went travelling once more before returning briefly to the UK, then made her way back to Sydney to move in with David in January 2026. His house now serves as her base whenever she's not exploring the world.
"It's so nice to have a home away from home, and to know I have someone on this side of the world that cares about me," she said. While in Sydney, Ella now joins David at his exercise classes, where she's become acquainted with many of his mates, and her own friends regularly pop round to see them both.
"My dad met him last year and they were inseparable which was so cute," she said. "He's definitely part of the family now. The age difference doesn't really matter, because we both love a challenge, and will say yes to anything."
